A backlit stem, with tufts of dark green leaves reaching upward. The network of veins on each leaf is highlighted in yellow from the sunlight shining through the blade. Clusters of dull yellow flowers hang below the stem, a pair emerging from each of the axils of the leaves. Anthers protrude beyond the end of the tubular petals. Leather leaf leaves frame the bottom of the image. Stack of 40 photos.

Haskap Harvest 2025 - Medium kitchen bowl, 2 lbs, more than half what it was last year due to moving bushes and an extremely dry spring. #gardening #gardensky #berries #haskap #yeg #youryeg #alberta #edmonton #canada #climatechange
It is #haskap season anew, and four years ago I posted this to try and explain why the little berries that no one has heard of fill my backyard and my heart with excitement each year:
Haskap bushes in the yard are ripening up. Looks like I'll have a bowl like this every day for the next few weeks. #haskap #berries #gardening
Photo of one of our Haskap berry bushes with berries. Some people refer to them as Honeyberry. Haskap has a different origin, but comes from the same subspecies of Honeysuckle. Hey, don’t ask me I get all my plant info from my wife, or daughter. The berries turn a deep shade of blue-purple when ripe. You need to plant at least two different varieties to get them to pollinate. We have 6 of these bushes. The berries are high in antioxidants, vitamin C, fibre and some studies have shown possible, not proven anticancer properties. They make great jams, pies and wine.
Photo of our apple tree with Crab apple buds. The main trunk and tree limb is a crab apple. There are 3 other branches or limbs that were grafted to the tree. So, besides the crab apple we get Golden Delicious, McIntosh and Granny Smith off the same tree.
Photo of more apple buds on the apple tree. I think this is the McIntosh branch. I can’t tell till they get bigger and I never remember which branch is which. Old timers. I could mark them, but that would make is too easy. Ha!
Photo of some prickly roses, or Wild Roses(Alberta’s provincial flower) I spotted on my walk today. Besides having RWNJs, Alberta is known as Wild Rose Country. Our licence plates have a Wild Rose Flower on them with the slogan "Wild Rose Country". The plants get up to 1.5 metres (3.2 feet) high and the 5 pink petals which have a bit of white flaring up from the base are open to about 5cm (2 Inches) in diameter some a bit larger. The pistil and stamen are yellow and they have a strong sweet rose smell which you can pick up from a few feet away.
Stopped for a garden check on my way for a walk. 32C(90F) in the sun, so a warm one. See alt text for more detail.

First haskap of 2025
May 14th is our new record for the first #haskap / #honeyberry to be ripe. Variety is 'Blue Velvet'.
Bombus huntii

Bombus bimaculatus
Our #haskap is in full bloom, and it is loaded with #bumblebee queens: Bombus huntii, B. perplexus, and B. bimaculatus #pollination #beesofcanada

First bee of the season! She's enjoying my haskap bush, which is an early bloomer, offering a critical food source for pollinators. #haskap #pollinators #supportnativebees

Yay! All four of the #Haskap I planted last fall have leafed. #NativePlants #Honeyberry #FoodGarden #GardeningForWildlife

At the grocery store and was so excited to find Haskap Berry Preserve and Haskap Juice made right here in #NovaScotia #Truro #Haskap #BuyLocal #BuyCanadian #Canada
🧪 #Haskap is an unusual #honeysuckle that requires two #flowers to be #pollinated by #bees to yield a single, well-developed or marketable fruit (i.e., two #berries inside each Haskap fruit), which is not the usual case for honeysuckle (see pink flowers). It was a very cool #crop plant to study!
Many of the Garden Centers in Nova Scotia carry them.
I started with a bucket in Truro, another in Sackville, male, female, I've got dozens of them now. Good early producers.
They grow bigger than I realized. I should have added space between #Haskap bushes. 🌱
We pick daily for about 2 weeks.
Here in BC, haskap farming has existed for about 10 years. Still in its infancy, but so much potential.

A free form scone sits on a metal baking sheet. It is lightly browned and has a few, very dark red berries embedded in it.
Haskap berry scones with wholemeal flour (1/4) and flavored with some citrus peel from our homemade Grand Marnier. They freeze really well, too. #baking #scones #homemade #haskap #brunch #food #eatlocal
Temperature wise, you'd be good. We're still thawing when #Haskap blossom & our first berries. By July, they stop producing berries, so I think your season is long enough & cooler zone 4 isn't risky, they're extremely hardy. 🌱
Soil might be the only issue, I don't know +or- Acidity level
The PNW is the best place in the world to live if you love berries! #Haskap (grown in Oregon) homemade jam (made by my Mom) with clotted cream and biscuit!
Bowls of long blue-purple Haskap berries
#Haskap are 1st to flower in May, as well as the first fruit to ripen. 1st pick was two bowls this size.
A few days later, there was half this amount again, harvest in late June to early July.

Because birds are so quick to empty a #Haskap bush, I've grown a dozen in buckets to move inside the greenhouse when they are producing berries. They ripen again almost every other day for a week or more. These buckets will be on the move, to my orchard on the ocean. 🌱 #Berries #Gardening
A tall thick Haskap bush. This one is about 4 feet high and 3 foot wide. It has long stem branches that are full of leaves and elongated blue berries (not sure they can be seen in the photo)
I suppose, when I decided to try to grow #Haskap berries, I must have thought that they were just a bush, no bigger than a highbush blueberry. Nope. These grow as big as a Currant, 6-7 foot tall.
It got crowded, so I transplanted some. Now I'm going to fill an orchard with them this year. 🌱
