A lichen-coated maple's bark has 2 white ladybeetle pupal cases, with distinctive black tufts of spines/hairs. One pupa is black, segmented, and kind of juicy, giving the impression it is alive. The other is lighter in colour and a bit like a husk; it doesn't seem to have hatched, more like it dessicated or was parasitized (though I saw no parasitoid hatching hole). The lichens are white, mint green and yellow. The bark is light grey. I'm quite pleased with this find, I have never met (tentatively ID'd) Exochomus before.
A photo from October, when I found what I think are 2 pupae of the Pine Ladybeetle, Exochomus quadripustulatus, while I was scrutinizing lichens and then following a jumping spider as it explored the tree.
