A small brown butterfly known as a speckled wood, perhaps 3cm across, rests on the forest floor. Its forewings have a medium brown colour with several irregularly shaped yellowish white spots or speckles. The hindwings are of the same background colour with a couple of speckles and three distinct eye spots on the trailing edge. Both pairs of wings have a narrow scalloped light coloured fringe.
