Shinano's escorts were destroyers #Isokaze #Yukikaze and #Hamakaze, who had just returned from #LeyteGulf. The three sisters served together nearly throughout the entire war; they had a reputation as ‘luck vampires’, the ships they were escorting usually sank while they went undamaged.

Unfortunately the ‘Jeep Carriers’ had a lot of grim firsts. #USSStLo was the first carrier sunk by #kamikaze and #USSGambierBay was the first and only
carrier sunk by naval gunfire, most likely from #IJNYamato. Both of these losses occurred off Samar during the battle of #LeyteGulf Oct. 25th 1944.
