This was my 2023 entry. Hemp cordage, mostly in its natural, unbleached colour. The cord making up the darker squares was dyed with leather dye because it was handy at the time. One is about an inch (2.5 cm) across and about an inch and a half tall. I ended up giving it to our bonus kid, who adores miniatures. Our people didn’t have hemp until Europeans introduced it but there are plenty of similar native fibres, including dogbane (Apocynum cannabinum), which the English colonizers in Tsenacommacah called “Indian hemp.” There are also native species of flax, milkweeds, the barks of various kinds of trees, yucca leaves… lots of plants for making cordage.
My 2024 entry. I call it The Snow White basket because the materials were brought to me by the woodland creatures of the neighbourhood. The farmer across the road was growing maize this summer and as it ripened, the deer, raccoons, and squirrels were stealing it and dragging it into my yard to eat, leaving me with a big mess to explain! So I shredded the husks, soaked them in warm water for a bit, and hand-twisted them into a cordage. Then I twined a basket just about 3.75” (9 cm) tall and 3” broad at the bottom. The handle is 3 strands braided. I gave this one to a friend at work who I used to supervise. She’s a supervisor now, herself.
#mARTch25 day 25- Basket These are both twined in the tradition of most of the Eastern Woodland peoples from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. These won me back-to-back blue ribbons at the Virginia State Fair in the Miniature Basketry division. Unfortunately, none of the other divisions permit twining.

I’ll start with this piece, which is only mine in the sense that I commissioned it from @cuatrojosz.bsky.social last year. Because I’m the luckiest boy ever, and @museumlara1.bsky.social is why.
The medallion is too thick and the red glaze came out muddy, but I like how the blue, white, and ivory came out! I pressed the design with a cookie cutter.
The rose I formed in a silicone candy mould. Again, the red glaze disappointed me. But I love the canvas texture and brown colour on the mug itself. I had trouble with a handle, so I decided I didn’t need one.
The inside was supposed to look swirly like a galaxy, not speckled with green like it’s mouldy. 🤣 Works well nonetheless.

@museumlara1.bsky.social convinced me to try pottery (other than historic replicas) again after a decades-long hiatus. This mug was one of my first projects. It’s lumpy, the bottom isn’t well attached, and the glaze didn’t come out like I thought. But it’s mine. And it works.
