Inside a white lid, 16 empty Mason bee cocoons each with a single chewed hole from the inside out. The cocoons are tan colored on the outside and root beer color on the inside. The larger size cocoons are female and the smaller ones are male.
Mason Bee cocoon openings after chewing their way to freedom - and soon to be pollinating trees and plants in our yard and neighborhood. π

I went to the Flower and Garden show in Seattle. I got tools, plants, and #masonbees supplies as well as inspiration.
Last week we introduced THE BeeSafeβ’ standard for raising solitary, cavity-nesting bees. If your bee house can't be opened or cleaned, it may be hurting the future bee population. Place it in a BeeGuard bag for a safe exit.

Only one full can and the rest of this one to empty. Then I have to refresh the tube liners. Spring is coming. #masonbees
Mason Bees need 4 things to thrive in your PNW garden:
Nov-Feb: Hollow stems for shelter
Mar-Apr: Blooms when temps hit 50Β°F
Apr-May: Damp, clay-rich mud for egg chambers
Jun-Oct: Undisturbed stems where larvae mature
Your garden is a life support system. ππΏ

Beeeesssssssβ¦. Mason bees, to be specific. My wife and I really enjoy raising and releasing mason bees. Cute stingless little pollinators native to the area. Each cocoon has one bee hopefully ready to go as soon as the flowers start blooming. #masonbees

With temps in the mid-50s, I decided to put all the #masonbees nesting material in the fridge. If I can't keep them in hibernation and they hatch before there is enough flowers, they will die.
If you are local to #seattle area and want some mason/cornifrons #masonbees. I will happily give you some cocoons. I won't ship them.
Just harvesting a few more #masonbees
I have hardly harvested any of my #masonbees yet. This "nice day" is not good.

I could have started cleaning the cocoons earlier, but pheasant season was more pressing. The only actual work required in raising #masonbees. This is just the start.
