As mentioned, Peyton's got some baggage. It's a sad but common set of circumstances. My heart goes out to anyone in that scenario. Of course, Dominick is sporting his own trauma and can relate to Peyton on a deeper level. -- Book quote 'As much as weโd prefer to have our own places, in order to keep Mom safe from our asshole father, we still live at home, knowing he wonโt touch her while weโre here now that weโre capable of knocking him on his ass if he lays a finger on her.' -- Dominick Antonov Dominick is far from a saint, but I love that his protectiveness, especially for abused and exploited women, is deeply rooted. Maybe he takes it a touch too far on occasion, but he's well intentioned... mostly. I do love that Peyton does set some boundaries and gets him to bend. It's infrequent, but it does happen. ๐ As this is Mafia / Bratva related, violence and other dark elements are expected. We also get discussions about off-screen actions which include domestic violence, grape, and forced loss of pregnancy. One more notable item: this ends with a cliffhanger. The couple kind of gets an HEA, but we have to stay tuned for other elements to play out. I received an author's copy of the audio book. The narrators, Walker Williams and Marina Barrett, are good. I do like how things go that first weekend. It's cute and sweet and steamy. -- Book quote 'His gaze meets mine, and he slowly rakes his eyes down my body. Usually when men do this, I feel objectified, but with this guy, it feels different. I donโt know why. Maybe itโs because it doesnโt feel like heโs checking me out as if Iโm a piece of meat, but instead drinking me in, like heโs thirsty and is dying for a sip.' -- Natalie Zapata There's a bit of a lull in the middle as the foundation for what comes next was laid out. I feel like this ended right when it was starting to get good again. A little inner circle drama, a race to correct a misunderstanding, and *BAM!* it's over. ๐ญ Also, this is a huge departure from Gio & Aria's story. Yes, Natalie here is the same one in that book. We get about two pages of her horrid ordeal with the late Senator (which can be triggering for some) and other refreshers from that book (at least one isn't completely correct). It's enough that some might see it as too much of a spoiler, but I digress. Other than some catty BS that was completely predictable, the darkness and angst were missing. I don't need those things or generally expect them from Nikki Ash, but after book one, I did expect more of the same here. If it weren't for La Stella's, I might have thought they weren't tied in the same series. Anyway, those are my two cents on this. If you don't like dark romance, skip book one and chapter 2, and you'll probably enjoy this. I do like it, but if you're coming off the other book like me and expect more of the same / similar, well, see above. I received an author's copy of the audio book. The narrators, Christian Leatherman and Cecily Foster, are great. Christian's accent is yum, and Cecily brings the emotions to life well. Story: 3.5 stโฆ

There are multiple instances of SA, along with substance abuse and violence. While these didn't stop me from loving the book, I do recommend checking your triggers. Giovanni (Gio) Valentino is all kinds of alpha and dark, but he has his morals when it comes to the safety of women. It's something that initially makes him appealing. As the story goes on, the list of reasons grows. Aria (Ari) Sutton Hightower... the things this woman is subjected to are horrible, but her strength and resilience in the adversity shines through. She's graped, beaten, and regularly abused, as well as strongly encouraged / forced to do drugs. Yet, she manages to come out on the other side. She may be weary, but I love that she's also hopeful. -- Book quote 'Even without the drugs, Iโve trained myself to escape my mind during his torture. For several long moments, Iโm free.' -- Aria Sutton The heat and chemistry are great, even when Gio fights it. The twists and turns kept me enthralled, even those that were predictable. Her tank top reads, โIf you hate tacos, Iโm nacho type.โ' -- Griffin King As much as I like the love story, I'm torn between the punny taco t-shirts and the insta-love between eight-year-old Levi and mischief making pup Maverick as my favorite part of this. There's also the "sword" fight with ๐ toys that Ava sells as a side hustle that is priceless. The puns and "sword" fight are hilarious, but the love between a boy and (not) his dog.... Fine, Levi and Maverick win that title. ๐โโ๏ธ๐ถ I get being affected by multiple cheating exes, but it may have been harped on too much for my liking. OK, it was too much for me. She acknowledges that they really were duds, and she should've moved on sooner. In my opinion, the issues it causes are a little overdrawn. It's the only thing that really didn't work for me.
