In the heart of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, Kirby's Mill stands as a living testament to U.S. history. Built in 1778 by Isaac Haines and partners, this grist mill operated for nearly two centuries, grinding wheat, buckwheat, rye, and corn with water power. Echoes of cannon fire from Revolutionary War battles at Red Bank would have been heard by mill workers whose labor provided flour for the new country. Owner William S. Kirby added a fourth floor in the late 19th century, and installed water turbines for year-round operation. This ensured Kirby's Mill remained an economic force, producing flour, cornmeal, and livestock feed well into the 20th century. Today, Kirby's Mill is on the National Register of Historic Places, restored by The Medford Historical Society.

The North Little Rock Old Mill remains a fantastic place to work. It’s more popular now than ever, so you have to plan your soot around busy hours. In the 70’s it was basically abandoned. It was a movie set for Gone with the Wind, neglected, then resurrected with the nostalgia boom of the early 2000’s. A popular park now, back then it was a fantastic place to spend the day. This model worked with me on several shoots where I was testing Portrait Lighting. We were in between poses and she was looking off and down, obviously deep in thought. This capture, candid, remains one of my all time favorites. A young woman, barely a teen, deep in thought of her future. What was going through her mind?
There's an age when we are consumed by thoughts of who we are. Shooting at the North Little Rock Old Mill back in the late 70's, this shot was caught in between poses. It remains one of my favorites and I wonder what was going through her mind.

The teen years are thoughtful years. Whenever I was asked to do a portrait of a girl leaving her teen years for adulthood in her twenties it was interesting to spend enough time to get to know her true personality. This young model was very thoughtful and quiet. She fit the mood of the Old Mill in North Little Rock, Arkansas perfectly. Her incredible clear blue eyes were made for this kind of light. The Old Mill back in the late ‘70’ was usually vacant. It was a photographer’s paradise with many angles, viewpoints, flowers and backdrops. It is much busier today and still a great place to shoot! Pentax Spotmatic F with Kodak Vericolor S, SMC Takumar 85mm f1.8. Late afternoon.
