at the counter standing slant and late the light hovering the sink still on i take an orange find the edge with a thumb press the skin gives way as it does lifts clean i pull it back in strips set them aside for a moment it looks like clean separation like it were possible to remove the after but the oil breaks against my fingers the smell takes the room i keep trying until the fruit is bare still your smell is there on my hands in the air everywhere

jade dragon frozen in the middle air and in the middle of a rictus, humourless, is stiffened in off-season rigor, promised riches nowhere to be seen. the sand around it’s rumpled by a thousand footprints, but its gaze is fixed inflexibly ahead. behind it helter skelter, wheel, and roundabout, still brightly hued though faded in the winter sun, stand in the selfsame state of hibernation, statues of their lively summer selves.

The words ignited as they sped through me; they scorched my tongue, they charred my palate, singed my cheeks and lips, and spurted out to blister, burn, and sear. The words turned icy as they crawled through me; gums and uvula and teeth flash-froze and shattered, sending shrapnel in a sharp and stinging cloud to slice and slash and lacerate. The words frothed acid as they flowed through me, dissolving throat and jaws, splashed deep within me just as much as spitting outwards, eating through soft tissue, leaving victim and attacker scarred. Those scars have healed now into channels down which novel thoughts can flow and grow.
