Google...Hedriodiscus is a genus of soldier flies (family Stratiomyidae) known for their large, wasp-like appearance, often with bright green and black coloration, and flattened abdomens. Found in North America and other parts of the world, these flies are often seen near water, and their larvae are aquatic, living in organic muck and decaying vegetation. They are harmless to humans and are important pollinators, feeding on nectar as adults.

I have been conducting my dissertation fieldwork in the #ponds at the wonderful Seven Sisters Country Park, UK. Part of the #SouthDownsNationalPark, we found lots of #freshwater inverts (including this incredible #soldierfly larvae), newt efts, and even some #fish (stickleback sp.) in one pond 🪲

I was surprised but pleased to discover a Twin-spot Centurion #soldierfly (Sargus bipunctatus) resting on a nettle in dappled shade at Longrun Meadow in Taunton today, very much at the end of its flight period.

A splendid, if very small, soldierfly Nemotelus uliginosus from Bowling Green Marsh yesterday. Also known as the Barred Snout. Mainly a coastal species of saltmarshes, brackish pools and ditches etc. New to me and site (I think).
