#NotAOneHitWonder #OTD in 1984, singer/songwriter Steve Goodman died young, age 36, from leukemia… He didn’t earn US #OneHitWonder honors, but he got to witness his song, “City of New Orleans,” earn the honors for Arlo Guthrie. #SteveGoodman #CityOfNewOrleans #OneHitWondered
#QuickSidenote Willie Nelson’s 1984 cover of “City of New Orleans” took Steve Goodman’s train ballad all the way to #1 on #Billboard's country chart… and earned Goodman a posthumous Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 1985. #SteveGoodman #WillieNelson #OneHitWondered
#QuickSidenote Another sidenote…? Ummm, just so you know, trains still cross the heartland… and you can still ride on Amtrak’s #CityOfNewOrleans #Amtrak #SteveGoodman #ArloGuthrie #OneHitWondered
#QuickSidenote Steve Goodman died young, age 36, from leukemia… but he got to witness his song become an American standard, & a lasting snapshot of a time when trains still crossed the heartland. #SteveGoodman #OneHitWondered
#Interestingly “The City of New Orleans” was written by Steve Goodman, a Chicago folkie & train fanatic who rode the Illinois Central line from Chicago to New Orleans (to visit his wife’s family) in 1970 & scribbled lyrics on a napkin in the club car. #SteveGoodman #CityOfNewOrleans #OneHitWondered

#Interestingly Arlo Guthrie is best known as the son of Woody Guthrie and the voice behind the 18-minute anti-establishment song/monologue “Alice’s Restaurant.” But in 1972, he had his only US #Top40 hit with a train song someone else wrote… #ArloGuthrie #SteveGoodman #OneHitWondered

Because it’s my mum’s favourite John Prine song.
this is a version I’d never heard before

FunFact - Steve wrote Go Cubs Go, still the theme tune for his home town ⚾️ Chicago Cubs
#SteveGoodman was an amazing musician, songwriter, and entertainer. He was also one of the funniest people that I ever met.
I cried in 1981 when I heard he died. We just got back from Florida when the news came over the radio.
Despite me being an avowed atheist and therefore having little interest in the new Il Papa, having heard yesterday that he's a #Cubs fan I thought I should offer this up by way of congratulations. This morning I thought it would be churlish of me to not follow through.
So enjoy.

Been listening to a lot of #SteveGoodman (z’’l) today. No specific reason, I just love his music. I’d totally forgotten how much fun “Let’s Give A Party” is, and “The Dutchman” always reduces me to tears. Beats John Prine’s “Hello in There” for tragic aging songs. Fight me on that one.
The Grand Canyon under a blue and cloudy sky. Small trees/shrubs in the foreground.
Run come see what this river has done
Carved the walls of Grand Canyon
With the colors of the risin' sun
Maybe someday the folks we elect
Will show this land a little more respect
