Amazing to see the advances in #bioacoustics over the past decade! Awesome #tech4wildlife entry 🤩
The left image shows an Open Acoustic Devices team member testing the first version of AudioMoth 1.0.0 with Lora radio integration in a Belize tropical forest. The AudioMoth is housed in an early prototype enclosure consisting of layers of clear acrylic laser cut sheets. Initial findings in 2018 indicated a wireless range of less than 50 metres. The right image depicts the same team member testing the integration of satellite communication on AudioMoth Dev for real-time alerts and status updates on a remote location on the Isle of Wight, UK. The AudioMoth Dev is housed inside an AudioMoth Dev Case with an AudioMoth external microphone installed on the bottom left of the case with deac-cat windshield.
#AudioMoth early ambitions of remote low-cost alerts has come closer to reality within a NatGeo funded project led by @jlahoz.bsky.social, integrating low-cost @arribada-i.bsky.social SMD Modules and Kinéis nanosatellites for real-time alerts from any location. #Tech4Wildlife @wildlabs.bsky.social
The pace of innovation in #ConservationTech has been remarkable over the past decade!
Awesome entry for the 10th Annual #Tech4Wildlife Challenge 📸
A homemade dictaphone is fixed to a wooden post in open grassland
An off the shelf dictaphone is shown. It is a small grey plastic box with two microphones protruding and internal circuitry.
Over 15 years ago the RSPB was building its own dictaphones for remote #seabird acoustic work on the Azores
Nowadays we use off the shelf versions to monitor a whole range of species across the world, from the Gola rainforest to the Shetland Islands

Autumn and winter is owl season. 🦉
The iconic Ural Owl in the Bavarian Forest National Park is the target of our #ecoPi units for live #AcousticMonitoring during their entire breeding season.
Winter times will require two solar panels and three battery packs. 🦾

The image shows a red fox (Vulpes vulpes) in a natural setting, likely a forest or woodland area. The fox is standing on a fallen tree trunk near a body of water, possibly a small stream or pond. The environment appears to be a mix of bare trees and some greenery, suggesting it might be late winter or early spring. The timestamp on the image indicates it was taken on March 18, 2022, at 7:46 AM.
Running #Deepseek with its Multimodal model Janus-Pro-7b locally is really crazy. I show this camera trap picture and ask: "Explain this picture. What animal species do you see?" See the answer in the follow up post. #tech4wildlife
