#Antonia Caenis, once enslaved, became the trusted companion (contubernalis) of #Vespasian.
A secretary in the household of Antonia Minor, she later held quiet influence at the imperial court—yet remains largely unseen in the #historical record.

Purple (noun): a position of rank, authority, or privilege in Ancient Rome.

One of the most round about things I've drawn out of spite- when I could've just drawn rain that was purple.

BOUNDARY STONE, MARCH-JUNE 76 CE. DRUGSTORE MUSEUM

This cippus or boundary stone was found in excavations conducted 2009-2012 along the modern via Portuense, next to a small tomb on a side road of the ancient via Campana-Portuensis, heading to the salt flats at the mouth of the Tiber, and later to the harbour town of Portus. The upper part, which is badly damaged, gives us the titles of the emperor Vespasian, which allows us to give this cippus a very specific date. It states that Vespasian, through the pontifical college and hence in his role as chief pontiff, restored land to sacred use that had been illegally occupied by private persons. This happened fairly often, as sacred land, usually belonging to a temple, was public land, and was frequently encroached upon by builders as was all public land. The formula "L.T. F. P. T. C." has not been decoded, but must have been common enough to be widely understood.

PAVEMENT IN OPUS SECTILE, C1 CE. TEMPLUM PACIS, CULT HALL

The discovery of the near-intact pavement of the cult hall of the Temple of Peace in 2005-2007 was an astonishing revelation. Vespasian's construction of this site of gardens and fountains with a sacred purpose was also a way of giving back to the people the magnificent Greek statues appropriated by Nero to decorate his private house, the Domus Aurea, restoring their public and sacred nature. In the main hall, a large podium visible at lower left raised up the statue of Pax, which has completely disappeared. The pavement, a grid pattern of pavonazzetto containing a background of giallo antico and rotae of alternating pavonazzetto with a border of porphyry and grey granite, only began to be despoiled in 526 with the conversion of a hall of the complex into the church of SS. Cosma e Damiano: one of the missing granite rotae from this pavement can still be seen in the lower church. In the C6 at least ten burials were made in the garden part of the Templum. The surviving cult hall, stripped of its cult statue of Pax set up by Vespasian to mark the end of the turmoil of the Year of the Four Emperors, may have been turned into the medical school set up in the Templum that is mentioned by Procopius in his De Bello Gothico. In any case spoliation of the Templum Pacis only began seriously in the C9, lasting until the C13.

#MosaicMonday brings us not #mosaic but #opussectile from the cult hall of the Templum Pacis, built by #Vespasian as a place of contemplation off the busy #ForumTransitorium. The #pavement was restored under the #Severans. In late antiquity the hall was still used, perhaps as a medical school.

My favorite last words come from the Roman Emperor Vespasian. During his life, he refused the usual divine honors given to emperors. On his death bed, he joked, “I do believe I’m turning into a god.”

FRIEZE AND CORNICE FROM THE TEMPLE OF VESPASIAN, 80-87 CE. CAPITOLINE MUSEUMS

In 1811, in one of the earliest scientific excavations of the Forum, the architect Giuseppe Valadier discovered large pieces of nearly intact trabeation of the temple of Vespasian and Titus, and was able to reconstruct a small length of the cornice and frieze. What he found was remarkable in its complexity and detail, Flavian baroque at its best. The cornice is decorated with carved leaves at the top, and supported by corbels sporting a Lesbian kymation above an egg-and-dart frieze in which the darts have arrowheads. Below is a frieze of dentils separated by rings with two double rings below, the signature of Domitian's architect Rabirius. Below, and even more complex egg and leaf motif frames the main frieze, which is carved with symbols of priestly sacrifice between bucrania (not shown). Everything is covered in relief - note particularly the sacrificial jug which has a hunt scene on it.

#ReliefWednesday brings us to #Rome, into the #CapitolineMuseums, where by sheer good fortune we can see a partial reconstruction of the cornice and frieze of the temple of #Vespasian, and even see the secret signature of the architect #Rabirius, who built the #DomusAugustana.
