A flock of Sanderlings search for food or stand in shallow, light blue shore water that stretches, on a scalloped diagonal, from the bottom right to the left mid-ground. A medium blue Atlantic Ocean makes up the rest of the mid-ground. On the horizon is a hazy gray and pink sky and the high and mid-rise buildings of Daytona Beach Shores and Daytona Beach bathed in pink, dawn sunlight. A lone gull, wings extend out and sideways appears to fly over the strip-an optical illusion, as it is much closer than the buildings to the camera.

A Turkey Vulture lifts off from the ground nearby, showing how large the wingtip feathers, often called “fingers” really are.

Wings That Wow

When I see a Turkey Vulture on the ground lifting off with #WingsWideOpen, the sheer size of their flight feathers amazes me.

Vultures spread the end tips in flight, thus the nickname “fingers” — a metaphor that loses something when seen up close.
