Shoebills are unfortunately not doing too well in the wild. It has been estimated that there are only between 3,300 - 5,300 adult shoebills left in the world according to IUCN. This is due to wars, habitat loss, poaching and capture for the illegal pet trade.

The largest swallow in North America, roughly the size of a Starling or a Robin, males like this one are covered in glossy, iridescent feathers that shimmer in direct sunlight, with a sheen that looks royal blue here (can look deep purple, and even green), he has a broad, powerful chest and a slender physique, with long, tapered, and pointed, wings reaching almost to the tip of its tail when folded, as pictured, sitting on a white horizontal rod, in contrast against a bright blue sky.
