● Belongs to the class of anti-diabetic medications called biguanides
● Lowers glucose production in the liver
● Delays absorption of glucose from the intestines
● Increases the body’s sensitivity to insulin
☆ Common Side Effects of Metformin:
● Diarrhea
● Headache
● Vomiting
● Nausea
● Flatulence
● Abdominal discomfort
☆ Advice for Metformin:
● You have been prescribed Metformin to control blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of diabetic complications such as heart attacks.
● Compared to other diabetes medicines, Metformin has a lower chance of causing weight gain and low blood sugar.
● Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) may occur when Metformin is taken along with other antidiabetic medicines, alcohol, or if meals are delayed/skipped. Always carry a sugar source for immediate relief.
● Inform your doctor immediately if you experience deep or rapid breathing, persistent nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain, as Metformin may rarely cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis (excess lactic acid in the blood).
● Long-term use of Metformin may cause vitamin B12 deficiency, which can lead to anemia. Symptoms include fatigue, pale skin, shortness of breath, or headache. Tell your doctor if you notice any of these symptoms, as you may need supplements.
● Your doctor will regularly monitor your blood sugar levels and kidney function while you are on Metformin.
