Tremendous day spent with the #Breckland Flora Group on their visit to Ranscombe Farm. Great discussions about all things arable and botanical!

Isn't this a fabulous sight: Orlaya grandiflora, Cyanus segetum and Papaver rhoeas in a cornfield. I'd like every field to be so rich 🀩

It's arable plant season 😍 the species name speculum-veneris means Venus' mirror, maybe because the plant is so stunnigly beautiful?

A aerial shot of some sharp-leaved fluellen plants growing on bare earth. The typical hastate leaves of this plant are clearly visible.

I'd only ever seen Sharp-leaved fluellen, Kicksia elatine, with a few sparse leaves before. This example that we found on the margins of an arable field in Oxfordshire this week is probably more typical in its prostrate, spreading, growth form #botany #ArablePlants #wildflowerhour

Ranscombe - Stories from a Nature Reserve - Kent Field Club| KFC

After seeing a few recent posts about #arableplants, their origin, and #localnaturerecovery, here’s a chain on arable plant conservation management. I cover this in more detail in my book on Ranscombe Farm Reserve www.kentfieldclub.org.uk/ranscombe-st.... 1/10

Happy to have seen some fields like this one in 2024. There are still some #arableplants out there!

Out and about round Luddesdown yesterday. Impressed by the amount of Stinking Chamomile growing amongst the vines in the organic vineyard. Also found my first Vernal Shieldbug. #arableplants #wildflowers #bugs #kentwildlife #kentdowns

Rat's-tail Fescue (Vulpia myuros) has somehow made it into my garden in Herts. Annual, it is an invasive arable plant elsewhere in the world. Favored with no-till & low-till farming systems, it is likely to become an annoying #arableplants. Surprisingly vigorous. @wildflower_hour

Looks a bit like a Pineapple, definitely smells like a Pineapple - its Pineappleweed, Matricaria discoidea. A member of the Asteraceae, the Daisy family, with dics florets only and no ray florets. 🍍 #WildflowerHour #ArablePlants

Scented Mayweed, Matricaria chamomilla, absolutely owning my local arable fields. The heady scent was strong and sweet in the warm air this afternoon. πŸ€πŸ’› #WildflowerHour #ArablePlants

The grey-blue pedicel arch shows there's definitely a lot of Field Pansy, Viola arvensis, in this pretty little one. The delicate violet colour makes me wonder if there has been hybridisation & introgressive back crossing with V. tricolor. #WildflowerHour #ArablePlants

In the stubble, a hare tried to be invisible; less welcome, Field Horsetail (Equisetum arvense).
Black Horehound looked black.
But treat to find Fluellen - here Round-leaved (Kickxia spuria) entwined with Sharp-leaved (K. elatine)!

- what's this weird grass?
- the leaves don't seem quite right for Wild Radish (Raphanus raphanistrun ssp raphanistrum)?
- is the umbellifer Fool's Parsley (Aethusa cynapium)?
& I think Black Bindweed. #Wildflowerhour #Brecks #Norfolk 5/5

OK, so I realise it hasn't got any petals, but I was a bit excited to find this as I think it is Rough Poppy, Papaver hybridum, which is quite rare. #wildflowerhour #arableplants
