A sculptural vintage 1950s 60s one of a kind handmade sterling silver and red enamel abstract modernist cocktail ring by Dallas Texas metalsmith/enamelist John Szymak. A very large and one of a kind statement ring! John Szymak attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts, and the School for American Craftsmen in Rochester, New York. He maintained a workshop in Dallas, Texas throughout most of his career. He worked in gold, silver, and pewter, with or without gems or enamels. He had a sterling and enamel ring in the seminal exhibition, "Designer - Craftsmen USA 1960" and the ring was pictured in the issue of Crafts Horizons (July/Aug 1960) that covered that exhibition. Measures 1-3/8" long by 3/4" wide at top, size 5.5 to 6, and weighs 7.8 grams total. Marked as shown, "Szymak Sterling". Excellent vintage condition.

An iconic vintage 1950s handmade sterling silver and wood abstract modernist dimensional design pendant on chain necklace by American mid-century studio jeweler, Henry Steig. The epitome of biomorphic design translated into wearable art! An exceptional and very desirable design by this messenger of modernism! Here's a short bio of the artist that I found online: Everyone knows the famous photo from the film The Seven Year Itch, of Marilyn Monroe standing on a New York City sidewalk, her skirt blown up by an updraft from the subway grate below, however, not everyone knows that at that moment she was standing in front of Henry Steig's jewelry shop at 590 Lexington Avenue. Henry Steig was a man of many talents, a true renaissance man - before he became a jeweler, he was a jazz musician, painter, sculptor, commercial artist, cartoonist, photographer, and a published short story writer and a novelist. My last photo is a great shot of the artist with one of his sculptures from the 1950s. This iconic pendant measures 2-1/2" long by 1-1/8" wide by over 1/4" thick in the wood section, and hangs on an 18-1/2" sterling silver chain from Italy. Total weight for the necklace is 16 grams. The pendant is marked as shown, "Steig Sterling". The chain is marked "925 Italy". Excellent vintage condition.

A striking vintage 1980s 90s one of a kind signed handmade sterling silver geometric modernist pendant on chain necklace. Really a great design and entirely handmade! Hand fabricated and formed from solid sterling silver sheet that has been oxidized and etched to produce bright contrasting strips inside the pendant body as shown. The pendant measures 3/4" long by 5/8" wide, and hangs on a 17" marked sterling silver chain from Italy. Total weight for the necklace is 7.1 grams. Hand etched markings are impossible to make out clearly, although I can see what looks like a maker mark that I can't decipher, and "925" for sterling silver. In any case it's an outstanding entirely hand crafted piece of wearable modernist art jewelry! Excellent vintage condition.

A one of a kind vintage 1960s 70s handmade sterling silver modernist statement necklace signed Artura. So unique, and such an incredible piece! This necklace is a showstopper! You won't see another like it! The pendant at bottom measures 4" wide by 3.25" tall, and hangs on the integral chain measuring about 28" wearable that will simply slip over most heads as there is no closure. (One could be easily added without taking away from the design if preferred. Weighs a super hefty 92.2 grams total. Marked "Artura" on one of the links near the back as shown. Tested and guaranteed to be as described. A big impressive piece of modernist wearable art that will look amazing no matter the occasion! From the estate of a NYC collector who traveled the world for her job in the publishing industry, and who acquired the bulk of her collection in the 1950s/60s/70s eras. Would look great on a man or a woman! Excellent vintage condition.

A unique vintage 1960s 70s one of a kind handmade sterling silver organic modernist Jelly fish design brooch. Entirely handmade and no doubt a unique piece of wearable art! A hammered convex sterling upper section from which dangle many silver wires resembling the 'arms' of the jelly fish, at least that's what it looks like to me. So unique, and no doubt a one of a kind dimensional design! Could also be easily adjusted to be worn on a chain or cord, and wearing it on a neckring with a bail-attachment on the pin stem would look amazing! Measures 3" tall by 1-5/8" wide by just over 1/2" thickest point. Weighs a super hefty 31 grams total or just about an ounce of solid sterling silver! The marks are lightly hand-etch on the pinback mechanism, and are very hard to make out in my photo or indeed even with a loupe in person. I've included my drawing of the marks in my last photo. The marks read, "Sterling Sibby" and another maker mark as shown. From the estate of a successful career woman in the publishing industry from NYC who traveled extensively and had incredible taste! Excellent vintage condition.

Edward de Large Edward de Large moved into silversmithing and jewellery at the RCA (Royal College of Art - London) from 1972 after studying ceramics at Camberwell. His first use of titanium was as a coloured turned base for a gold bowl. He continued to use it while at the RCA but it was after graduation in 1975 that his real experimenting with the material began. His designs were inspired by the cloudscapes observed during a flight to Japan. He enjoyed the challenge of achieving his planned results with such a difficult material, so unlike the traditional metals used for jewellery. His work progressed by continuous experimentation. Pattern was carefully planned and designed using various masking techniques and both brush and dip anodising.
As gold prices rose in the 1970s, jewellers began to look for alternatives to precious metals. Traditionally, they would have turned to base metals, such as bronze, iron and steel. Now, with the continuous search for the 'new', they sought out a wider repertoire of metals and also innovative techniques to create colour through patina. Silver was oxidised, aluminium anodised and painted. In the space industry experiments with new materials led to the development of metals such as titanium and niobium. Their iridescent colours, achieved through heat or electrical currents, soon attracted the attention of jewellery designers. De Large studied ceramics at the Camberwell School of Art and later silversmithing at the Royal College of Art, London, where he became interested in titanium. In 1975 he was awarded the Sandersons Art in Industry Award to travel in Japan, where he concentrated on the skills of metal inlay and patination. He went on to develop his own sophisticated and exacting method of anodizing titanium allowing him to achieve a remarkably complex and painterly effect. Variations of colour are created by varying the voltage and timing of the electrical current through the metal, while the sense of perspective is enhanced by polishing and sand-blasting. The fine detail he achieves is the reward of applying the current in a controlled way through the tip of a modified paintbrush. The brooch shows de Large's fascination with flight and perspective, and also the inspiration of the artist René Escher. De Large has cited the monolith in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film '2001: A Space Odyssey' as the inspiration for the shadowy rectangular form visible on the surface of the brooch.
Two Edward de Large anodized titanium in sterling silver brooches from the 1970s - they remind me of Yes album covers from that period! NFS

a WHIMSICAL and fun vintage 1960s 70s handmade copper enamel modernist Fish design pendant. A fun and charming entirely handmade piece of vintage modern art to wear! The pendant measures 2.25" long by 1.25" wide and is shown on a copper neckring (not included), and could also be worn on a chain or black cord, or even worn as a pin with a safety pin through the bale at top of the pendant. (For a fan of fishing, and since the bail is at the mouth of the fish, this could also be attached to a fishing hook then to a cord or chain for a unique and no doubt much-remarked look!) Unmarked, and no doubt sold at a gallery or art fair with artist paperwork that has been lost over the years. This is a handmade piece of artisan jewelry that has natural variations due to the handcrafting process that produce a rough and irregular finish. a HUGE vintage 1983 signed and numbered entirely handmade sci-fi super-hero post-modernist sterling brooch pin by American metalsmith Jonathan Quick (b.1957). This one of a kind creation looks like either a space ship or perhaps an accessory from Batman's utility belt! Jonathan Quick is an American artist/metalsmith who is a professor at Ohio Wesleyan as well as a partner at Quick & Cetlin Metalsmiths (1983-present), and has exhibited extensively across the country since the mid 1980s. Thanks to a tip from a generous colleague, I was able to locate the artist, and he told me a little bit about this brooch. He wrote, "This is a piece I made as a MFA graduate student in the gold and silversmithing department at SUNY New Paltz around 1983. It is part of a series of work in which I was exploring the expressive potential of form and mechanics. I studied with professor Bob Ebendorf and I sold the piece to Barbara Rockefeller during my time at New Paltz. My present work is based in foundry casting where I teach at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware Ohio." He doesn't make jewelry any more, so this piece is doubly rare! A quirky little bit of signed numbered modernist jewelry history and makes a heck of a statement! Made almost entirely of sterling silver with those weird niello enamel inlay symbols at front, and white plastic and gold plated metal pieces at top and bottom that look like they could be from either electronic or automotive parts. Measures 3" by 2-1/2" and weighs 50.2 grams total. Marked at back "Sterling J. Quick 25". Incredible piece! Excellent vintage condition.

Marked "925" for sterling silver at backs. Otherwise unmarked, and no doubt a one of a kind pair of studio wearable art cufflinks. a RUGGED pair of vintage 1960s signed DC one of a kind handmade sterling silver brutalist modernist dimensional design cufflinks. Such a unique and intriguing vintage brutalist modernist design! Each is unique as you can see in my photos, and no doubt a one of a kind pair by a talented mid-century artist! Measure 7/8" by 3/4" at fronts, and the pair weigh a hefty 23.3 grams total. Marked at back of one cufflinks as shown, "DC" and dated "'69" for 1969. Also marked on the swivelbacks, "Sterling". I purchased these cufflinks at an estate sale in Wisconsin, and I am guessing that the artist was from nearby Chicago but I haven't been able to find out anything about the maker. In any case, the incredible design speaks for itself! Excellent vintage condition
an INTRICATE pair of vintage 1960s 70s handmade 800 silver geometric modernist design cufflinks from Orno of Warsaw, Poland, and with an original Orno paper label with information about the pair in Polish. Orno (meaning "I adorn" in Latin) was an artist cooperative in Warsaw composed of many artists and craftspeople. The jewelry was primarily made in silver and the items were produced in small series, never exceeding 100 of any item made by the cooperative. This pair of dimensional geometric design cufflinks were most likely made in the 1960s to 1970s, but there are no date letters on Orno jewelry, so hard to say exactly. The cufflinks measure 7/8" by a hair over 1/2" at fronts by just over 1/8" thick, and the pair weigh 10.6 grams total. Marked "Orno" on both cufflinks as shown, also the Polish silver hallmark for Warsaw and 800 silver used after 1963. As noted above, this pair come with an original Orno paper label with information about this pair of cufflinks written in Polish including the designer/maker name which I am unable to read. a UNIQUE no doubt one of a kind vintage 1980s 90s handmade sterling silver with anodized aluminum rods post-modernist dimensional geometric design bangle bracelet by acclaimed jewelry designer, metalsmith, and educator Helen Shirk (b. 1942). A simple bangle that twice encircles the wrist with heavy gauge sterling wire with a half-circle joining the two ends at top, and with four anodized aluminum rods perched at top in a dimensional geometric design that echoes that heavy sterling wire of the bangle but in colors! Such a unique and thoughtful design, the work of a master! Here's a short biography of the artist that I compiled from online sources: Helen Shirk (b. 1942 in Buffalo, NY) is a metalsmith/jeweler and educator. She studied with Earl Pardon at Skidmore College (BA, 1963) and Alma Eikerman at Indiana University (MFA, 1969). She taught jewelry and metalwork at San Diego State University from 1975 to 2010, retiring as Professor of Art Emeritus. Her work is in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as well as the Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim, National Museum of Modern Art (Kyoto), Victoria and Albert Museum, National Gallery of Australia, Mint Museum of Craft and Design, and the Oakland Museum. In 1999 Shirk became a Fellow of the American Craft Council. In 2017 she received the lifetime achievement award from SNAG (Society of North American Goldsmiths). See my last image for a photo of the artist in her studio. The above is an abbreviated biography, and for further exhibition information and her work shown in print, I can provide a more extensive listing on request. This bracelet measures just over 1" wide at top, the inside diameter is 2.5" and is perfectly round as shown, and the bracelet weighs 28.1 grams total. Marked as shown, "H. Shirk" inside the band of the bracelet. Tested and guaranteed to be as described. Excellent vintage condition.

a SUPERB and rare - one of a kind - vintage 1950s handmade sterling silver modernist bracelet by American artist/silversmith Ruth Berridge (1921-2004). She is very well known to collectors of mid century modernist jewelry, though her jewelry items are relatively scarce compared to most. A one of a kind entirely handmade and incredibly complex design bracelet of convex plaques alternating with concave plaques with two rows of faceted crystal beads above each of the concave links. This bracelet is from her personal collection and no doubt was worn by her, and was purchased from her estate after her death. (I am also listing a brooch that I think she probably wore with this bracelet, although it's not a perfect match, but made from the same materials.) Measures 1-3/8" wide with inside wearable circumference of 7-1/2", but due to the unique construction of the closure the bracelet will fit a 6-1/2" wrist or less. (A silversmith could add an extension link or two inside at the closure to allow it to fit a larger size - maybe 1/2" to 1" - but without altering the visual impact of the design.) Weighs a super hefty 83.3 grams total. Marked as shown, "Berridge" and "Sterling". Excellent vintage condition.
