A photo of the dorsal surface of an orange and yellow IO Moth with large eyespots on its hindwings. The moth's body is covered in fur-like scales and it has feathery antennae. The forewings are orange with large dark spots on the middle front and r smaller dark spots and a washed out dark line along the trailing edge. The Hindwings are bright yellow and have orange fur-like scales along the inner surface that leads to an orange line that sweeps along the trailing edge. A black line is just forward of the orange line and large dark eye spots are in the center of the hindwings. These eye spots are usually hidden and are flashed when the moth feels threatened (I gently spread the forewings to get this photo)
A focus stack of the IO Moth's forebody taken low and from the side showing the large fluffy legs, the fuzzy yellow head, the dark eyes, the fluffy antennae, and the wing's leading edge in greater detail
A photo of the IO moth's dorsal surface as it normally appears (when it does not feel threatened.) It has a broad triangular almost arrowhead shape. The forewings marked with a large dark spot in the middle, a washed out dark line along the trailing edge, and small dark spots along the front, cover the hind wings almost completely.
A photo of the moth resting on my fingers. The moth with wings closed is about 2 inches across. The moth is not in the best focus in this image as I was trying to balance and shoot my camera one handed!
