It has brown legs and a brown stripe along the leading edge of its forewings. The wings are a light shade of lime green which is indicative of a late season flight (This one was observed in late August.) earlier flights are a darker more intense green. There are 2 small yellow eyespots on the forewings in the front median area. The rear wings have long swallow-like "tails" and slightly larger yellow eyespots in the middle.

There are white chevron-like markings in the middle of both the fore and hind wings as well as scalloped lines along the edges of both wings. The pokeweed leaves are elliptical and some of the flower stalks are seen just out of focus in the foreground.

The head is small and lacks mouth parts as silk moths do not eat as adults, only flying to mate, large dark eyes are just under the very large feathery tan antennae which indicate that this is a male (The antennae help him locate the female's pheromones.). The large wings are held at an obtuse angle behind it.

The hindwings are tan at the trailing edges, with a dark band a 4th of the way up, and large dark black and yellow eye-spots just forward of the median.

There is some thought that these eyespots closely resemble the eyes of Great Horned Owls which greatly aids in their defensive potential.

While the little moths often conceal much beauty until we look closely, I was also visited this year by the giants of House #Saturnidae, the Silk Moths.

I had not planned on setting the bug-light out tonight as it was a work night. I am so glad I did. A member of House #Saturnidae came fluttering out of the dark like a night angel and it was magical. Photos will be shared upon waking. 😻
