Significant Whooper Swan northwards movement over Inchgarth with flocks of 30 and 12 over late morning, most I’ve ever seen over here. 2 Greylags looking quite settled on the new scrape, and 3 Sand Martins were my first of the year here #birdingscotland
15 summer plumaged Black-throated Divers still lingering off Vatersay today and very nice they looked too! Also the Surf Scoter still off Vatersay, Velvet Scoter in the Sound of Barra and a few more flocks of Whooper Swans passing over. #birdingscotland
There’s been a dearth of white winged gulls in NE Aberdeenshire this winter so the 2 Glaucous Gulls that have turned up in Fraserburgh Harbour have been very welcome. This ringed individual is a bit of a beast as you can see next to a great black back. #BirdingScotland #Gulls #Birds
Walk to school? Looxury! We had to crawl backwards over ….! Great shot Alan.
Here’s a Waxwing in the rain for #BirdOfTheDay. Eating doesn’t stop for the #weather!

A very pleasant walk in the on-and-off sunshine yesterday, Emperor Moth Lure didn't work sadly but a Golden Eagle and a singing Ring Ouzel is not bad...
Also a few chunky Drinker moth caterpillars on the move...

Having spent the last eight months out at sea, Puffins - known here as Tammie Norries - will soon be returning to our Shetland shores. Over the next couple of weeks they'll be re-establishing pair bonds and inspecting nesting burrows.
Magical birds!

Nice selection and #BirdOfTheDay theme Rob. Sorry I’m late to the party with my shot of Mute Swans in formation for #LargeBirdsInFlight.

Another trip to the top of the Law for more displaying raptors (and some insects of interest too).

Hi, looking for help in identifying this Diver spotted today at Maidens. Thinking Black Throated but lacks white patch at rear flank and has mottled flank and white indentation on collar associated with Great Northern. Any help appreciated.

10 pairs of Common Crane bred in Scotland in 2025, successfully raising nine chicks. Here's hoping they have a successful 2026.
I've only been lucky to see these delightfully elegant birds once in Scotland. #BirdingScotland www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Bit of patch gold this evening with a summer plumage Slavonian Grebe on Castle Semple often distant. #digiscopes with kowa884 using iphone16Pro and vario adapter
Also Osprey over Barr loch, 48 whooper swans and the hybrid shoveler x BW teal. #birdingscotland #clydebirding
Whooper Swans migrating north past Barra today once the rain cleared. 260 grounded Black-headed Gulls, a high count for the island, also departed northwards when the weather improved and 4 Fieldfares were new in. #birdingscotland
Why on earth did that fish jump in to its bill like that?! 😉 Great timing Alan.
For #BirdOfTheDay this Grey Heron clearly enjoyed its #snacks but managed this one eventually!

Some early(ish) vis-mig and a few displaying raptors, from the top of Dundee Law.

Distant pics of today's Red Kite, still a scarce bird in Fife but there seems to be a few around just now. #birdingFife #BirdingScotland
Fabulous but all-too-brief views of this rather elusive North American Bonaparte's Gull in Lerwick, Shetland today.

Numbers of Golden Plovers are building up once more on Tiree's grasslands on their way north to Iceland. This was part of a flock of 850 at Heylipol this morning with some 4,000+ around the island today #BirdingScotland

Went to @argatyredkites.bsky.social last Friday. Great place with really friendly and knowledgable staff. Amazing opportunity to see 30 or more majestic Red Kites circling, swooping and diving at close quarters.

It can't be the end of March already surely?! It must be - Rob has set #BestOfTheMonth for #BirdOfTheDay and has led the way with his excellent set of images. Nothing exotic from me - just a House Sparrow from our garden.
