A sculpture of a lion with manlike features, or a man with a lion’s mane, I’m not sure which. Whatever it is I think it’s very beautiful. It stands on a plinth made of on old tree trunk in the garden at Chatsworth. It’s next to a path and surrounded by large granite rocks. The sculpture is on the left of the frame look across the photo. The path curves in from the bottom right corner and out again half way up. Trees form the backdrop including a lovely red Japanese maple.

A landscape oriented infrared image of the ring pond in Chatsworth garden. It’s summer and the pond is covered with aquatic leaves facing this way and that as they spread across its surface. The pond appears black and the leaves white upon it. Over on the far side of the pond are clipped conifers (or some such tree) my son always calls them gherkins as their shapes are similar. Beyond them is a breech hedge that curves around the pond and beyond that mature oaks and other trees. The Pond Written by Mary Oliver August of another summer, and once again I am drinking the sun and the lilies again are spread across the water. I know now what they want is to touch each other. I have not been here for many years during which time I kept living my life. Like the heron, who can only croak, who wishes he could sing, I wish I could sing. A little thanks from every throat would be appropriate. This is how it has been, and this is how it is: All my life I have been able to feel happiness, except whatever was not happiness, which I also remember. Each of us wears a shadow. But just now it is summer again and I am watching the lilies bow to each other, then slide on the wind and the tug of desire, close, close to one another, Soon now, I’ll turn and start for home. And who knows, maybe I’ll be singing.
