Fruiting bodies (๐ ๐ก๐๐๐๐๐๐) of club moss sticking out of the snow in Shindagin Hollow, not really a flowering plant but I'll tag it #bloomscrolling anyway

Creeping cedar or running cedar, appearing like a tiny forest at ankle level
Candelabra style elevated strobili of the creeping cedar, they barely reached the top of my 8โ boots
An extravagant princess pine along a path in the forest
Bright yellow strobili crown an individual princess pine
A close-up shot of the leaves of Lycopodium clavatum.
Lycopodium clavatum, common names include Stag's-horn clubmoss, running clubmoss, or ground pine.
These lycophytes take 8 years to germinate and another 25 years to mature. That is why plucking these over temporary holiday decorations is abhorrent. #lycopod #clubmoss #plantsky
Clubmosses are an ancient group of plants. Unlike the even more ancient mosses and liverworts, clubmosses are vascular plants. They can move water and nutrients through vascular tissue #clubmoss #lycophyte #plants #iroquoisnationalwildliferefuge #geneseecounty #wny

There are days in the spring when you can walk through the forest and feel the seasonal re-birth happening around you. These are the days to lay on the moss and feel the sun and wind play across your skin... the days you feel alive and connected to Earth.

This #clubmoss is a true #periglacial #relict, a living reminder of the regionโs ancient past. The survival of such species in these isolated, high-altitude #environments provides valuable insights into the history of #Dartmoorโs flora.

Fir #clubmoss is a rare species that survives today mostly in upland areas of Britain, with #Dartmoor being near the southern limit of its UK range. Its presence on #Sharpitor is a reminder of the dramatic #climatic shifts that have shaped the Dartmoor #upland landscape.

Flat-branched tree clubmoss. Dendrolycopodium obsurca. Another common name is Princess Pine. The tiny pointed leaves are called microphylls. The tips are called stoboli, singular strobulus. The number of stroboli is a characteristic of identifying species of clubmoss. Can make a large colony.
What the stroboli, the tips, look like after they have released their spores.

We have spotted an amazing array of #mosses and #lichens on recent visits to our land at #Sharpitor. These include rare Fir Club moss, a periglacial relict plant.

color film photo of a few emerald-green clubmosses growing from the moist, pine needle-covered ground; one slightly out-of-focus specimen near the left edge of the image can be seen topped with an orange-yellow strobilus, which is still partially covered by its "sheath(?)"

Potted clubmoss plant (green with small scale-like leaves), in a clear pot on a supermarket shelf. a label in front of plant says it is a frosty fern plant.
no, No, NO, NOPE. Not a #fern, that is a #clubmoss (Selaginella to be more precise), member of a non-fern branch of the green tree of life. Look at those cute lycophyll scale mini-leaves, nothing like the large true leaves of ferns. It isnโt frosty either. #botanicalaccuracy In NJ, USA. #botany ๐ฑ
This club moss from the previous shot is Lycopodium obscurum. It's not a moss; it looks more like a miniature conifer and descended from giant 100 ft tall seedless lycophytes that dominated the coal swamps of the Carboniferous Period #NaturePhotography #beauty #nature #evolution #wetlands #clubmoss
This is THE coolest Clubmoss Iโve ever seen. It appears to be a species of giant Huperzia but which one I have no idea. It was growing at sea level on a massive boulder in Etna Bay, West Papua, a place where fewer than 50 tourists have ever travelled too. #Clubmoss #Botany #lycopod #Expedition
