OK. They aren’t really dancing. They are exhibiting the classic wing-drying behavior they share with cormorants.

Still, dancing made for a more compelling story, don’t you think?

Honestly, I am not sure if this is a Lesser Goldfinch feeding its mate or a fledgling from a very early clutch. Whichever it is, it was from yesterday's walk and started out with a lot of flapping wings. #Birds

Two large gray birds are perched on a nest of twigs in the top of a tall tree. These are Great Blue Herons. Great Blue Herons are mostly monogamous during a single breeding season. Once a pair forms through courtship, they generally remain together to build the nest, incubate eggs, and raise young, with both parents sharing duties. However, they do not form lifelong bonds; most individuals choose new mates each year. This photo was taken in Essex County in the Adirondack Park in upstate New York.

Two small woodpeckers with striking black-and-white patterns are engaged in a dynamic interaction on a vertical tree trunk. The bird on the left has its wings flared wide, showcasing white spots on its dark feathers, and is looking toward the other bird. The woodpecker on the right is clinging to the bark with its sharp claws, leaning back with one wing partially extended and its head tilted up, revealing a small red patch on the back of its crown. The scene is filled with movement and bright, natural light, set against a soft, blurred background of winter trees.

Mated pairs of crows rattle and coo to one another. The meaning is obvious. 'I love you.' The courtship and/or renewal of their bond includes gentle cooing, nuzzling noises, and singing softly.🖤🩶

A European starling perches briefly on a wire attached to an old concrete fence post—a remnant from another era—in Longmont, Colorado. In this horizontal color photograph, the concrete post enters near the center of the frame, with bent and twisted fence wires extending in multiple directions. In the upper right quadrant, the starling balances on the wire, poised for flight. The soft, overcast light brings out the bird’s iridescent colors beautifully. The background is a blur of tree foliage, likely from an invasive Russian olive.
