A photo of a group of mica cap fungi found today on our afternoon walk. The rims of these are just beginning to deliquesce. This is a composite of 150 images focus stacked. I finally found my good macro lens!!! Thus the 150 vs what typically would have only been 20-ish.

Todays fungi group photo is the mica cap, Coprinellus micaceus. #EdibleFungi

The species is great at #Bioaccumulating heavy metals so while they might be delicately tasty, if you plan on consuming be mindful of where you collect. #FungiFriends #Photography

Maybe these will finally be the last few Chanterelle of the season.

With these recent freezing nighttime temps I'm surprised these weren't more mushy...pun intended. #DadJokes #EdibleFungi #Foraging

Based on the amount of frass, they've definitely been here for a while. #FungiFriends #Fungi

A big cluster of Winter Chanterelle popping under out from under a large heavily decayed decaying, I assume Douglas fir, trunk. Found in a moss dominant "understory" forest with predominantly Douglas fir and the occasional madrone. Very little understory with only a smattering of salal here and there. Lots of pinesap and orchid and oh so many mushrooms, everywhere you look.

These have hollow tubes for stems and shallow gills that are decurrent and don't extend down to much further below the cap.

A pair of winter chanterelles. There are usually singles and couples scattered about and a good sized cluster or 2 to be found in patches covering a 30x30ft area. The larger gatherings typically are found in depressions or growing out from under heavily decayed wood like in image 1.

Winter chanterelle are finally here!

Craterellus tubaeformis, also known as the trumpet/funnel chanterelle or yellowfoot.

A prolific grouping of freshly emerged cream colored oyster mushrooms populate a large area of this stump. 3rd flush of the year so far for this particular stump....Edible!!

On the other end of the stump another smattering of oysters spring forth out of the moss covered decaying log.

What I believe to be Chocolate Tube Slime mold, Stemonitis splendens, before they turn all chocolaty. Within a few hours of seeing them I'd wager they already started turning brown....not edible...

Slime mold and Oyster fungi make for a great pairing for an afternoon walk...maybe not so much for dinner plans. 🌱

A group of oysters, Pleurotus ostreatus, growing ~5 feet off the ground out of a very rotten stump, which I believe was an Alder.

A couple of slugs had a good meal as evidenced by the holes in some of the caps of these oyster fungi. But surprisingly most were still intact.

A view from above the stump taken while balancing on a portion of the trunk of the same stump that had fallen this past fall. I found a few colonies of slime mold on the same stump this past fall.

Oysters! Super happy to find some that weren't all desiccated and were just a smidge slug-eaten. 🌱🍄📷

I found these jellied orange brains on the underside of this log while clearing it from the trail. Super fresh and slimy. One of these days I'll have to try growing these at home to candy.

I love snacking on fresh orange jelly fungi. This one resembled jellied 🧠s, but tasted just the same.

The underside of this Winter Chantallle has a lot of insect frass on it indicating it's on the older side. Still edible just brush it off a bit.

The top side of the same Winter Chantallle in the first picture. The usual wooly top wasn't evident on this one.

This winter chanterelle appears to have fallen over from exhaustion. Poor little bugger has likely been waiting awhile to be plucked. A little less frass on this one but that's probably because the rain could wash it away.

(Craterellus tubaeformis)

Only a handful, and a little on the older side, but I'll still fry them up and mix them into some noodles tonight. 🍜 😋

Hericium abietis - found in old growth forest around Snoqualmie Pass, 2023. It was a small cluster, about the size of a honeydew melon, but it was perfect.

Autumn's here!

Out for a walk this evening and happened across some Birch Bolets.

Apparently the young ones are good eating - but I wasn't keen! :)

It’s scarlet elf cup time! These beautiful little fungi look and feel almost man-made like little plastic cups. They are crunchy with a mild mushroomy flavour but tbh I much prefer gazing at them in wonder. They are too pretty to pick. #ediblefungi #fungifriends #foraging
