EPA Takes Bold Action to Ensure Drinking Water is Safe from Microplastics, Pharmaceuticals, and Potential Hidden Contaminants | US EPA EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced a landmark set of actions to safeguard the nation's drinking water from microplastics, pharmaceuticals, forever chemicals, and dozens of other contaminants.

EPA recently added microplastics & pharmaceuticals to the drinking water Contaminant Candidate List as priorities for research, with no binding rules yet. Most treatment plants weren’t built to remove either. Despite this action, real protection may be years away.

EPA and HHS Announce New Efforts to Target Microplastics Microplastics are widespread in water and in farm soils, where they can alter soil biology and be taken up by plants. They have been found in fruits and vegetables, seafood, honey, beer, and other foods. The food system is also a source of contamination: Farms use plastic that can shed the particles, and food and beverage companies are a leading source of plastic pollution. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has now launched a $144 million research program—called STOMP: Systematic Targeting Of Microplastics—which will be run out of its Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H). “Americans deserve clear answers about how microplastics in their bodies affect their health, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in a press release. “Through ARPA-H’s STOMP program, we will measure microplastic exposure, identify sources of risk, and develop targeted solutions to reduce it.” Scientists and public health advocates have been calling for more research into microplastics and human health, since the science is new and the compounds are already ubiquitous in human bodies. Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) added microplastics to a draft of the Contaminant Candidate List 6 (CCL), EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced. That would put microplastics on...

EPA rollbacks: Jedi mind tricks vs. science “These aren’t the droids you are looking for.” Obi-Wan Kenobi’s words distort the reality the Imperial Stormtrooper is seeing, causing him to overlook R2-D2 and C-3PO and allow them to escape. Reality distortion makes great science fiction but is terrible for our health and economy. With its repeal of the Endangerment Finding and its rollback of the Mercury and Air Toxic Standards (MATS) rule, Trump’s highly politicized Environmental Protection Agency is attempting Jedi mind tricks instead of using science to improve our lives. As I write this, headlines report the hottest March temperatures on record, a disastrous ski season, and patterns portending another terrible fire season, yet Trump and his EPA dismantle essential protections. Politicians have attempted manipulation before, so why is this news? The Clean Air Act was thoughtfully designed to be science-based and health-centric. The 1970 Clean Air Act is a product of incredible bipartisan leadership (passing 73-0 in the Senate and 375-1 in the House) and was carefully crafted with a broad scope so Congress would not need to pass new laws each time new toxic pollutants were identified. It has been a resounding success. A 2020 analysis showed it has prevented 370,000 premature deaths and saved...

After chemical industry lobbying, EPA considers dropping clean air protections for plastic ... This article originally appeared on Inside Climate News, a nonprofit, non-partisan news organization that covers climate, energy and the environment. Sign up for their newsletter here. When former top Environmental Protection Agency official Judith Enck noticed a cavalcade of chemical and plastics industry lobbyists visiting the agency’s Washington headquarters in February, she wondered what could be up. An answer came weeks later: The agency is moving toward resurrecting a proposal from the first Trump administration to ditch Clean Air Act regulations involving one of the industry’s go-to methods for chemically processing plastic waste into new industrial feedstocks or fuels. The EPA is curiously approaching this by embedding a request for comments on so-called “advanced recycling” via a method known as pyrolysis in a rulemaking on an entirely different category of waste incineration. “I thought, could it be a mistake, or are they quietly trying to push this through?” Enck, a former EPA regional administrator during the Obama presidency, wondered in an interview on Tuesday. Just one paragraph related to advanced recycling of plastics was included in a 17-page Federal Register notice for a proposed rule on wood incineration. Either way, the stakes are significant, according to industry and environmental advocates...

April 2, 2026 WASHINGTON – U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. today announced landmark, coordinated actions to address microplastics contamination, one of the most urgent and growing public health challenges facing Americans. The announcements, made at a press conference at EPA headquarters, represent a major step forward in President Trump's commitment to Make America Healthy Again. For the first time in the program's history, EPA is including microplastics as a priority contaminant group in its draft Sixth Contaminant Candidate List (CCL 6), now open for public comment. CCL 6 also includes pharmaceuticals as a group—another first—along with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), disinfection byproducts, 75 individual chemicals, and nine microbes that may be present in public drinking water systems. The CCL is a critical tool under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) that drives research, funding, and future decisions on regulating emerging threats to drinking water. By elevating microplastics and pharmaceuticals to priority group status, EPA is directly responding to the concerns of millions of Americans who have long demanded greater transparency and accountability about what is in their water. Additionally, the Advanced Research...

EPA head Lee Zeldin considered favorite to be next US Attorney General Speculation is growing whether President Trump will replace ousted Attorney General Pam Bondi with EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin. Reports suggest he is the front-runner to become the new Attorney General after Bondi’s removal on Thursday. Time magazine and CNN reported Zeldin, the former New York congressman is understood to be the leading candidate. Trump has not finalized his decision to pick Zeldin as her replacement, the New York Times and CNN reported. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche has also been mentioned as a possible candidate, sources told ABC. But Zeldin’s name is understood to have come up the most often in discussions of candidates for the role, reported Time on Friday. Zeldin is 46 and has been EPA Administrator since January. During that time, he has overseen what he’s described as “the largest act of deregulation in the history of the United States.”...

EPA's temporary switch to E15 gas raises concerns about engine damage, smog SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER, La. (KSLA) - The Environmental Protection Agency is temporarily switching to gasoline with more ethanol, increasing the amount from 10 percent to 15 percent starting May 1. The EPA says the change will help bring down gas prices, but local experts warn the higher ethanol blend could damage engines and increase smog. Charles Williamson, owner of Bossier Power Equipment, said E15 burns faster than regular gas, possibly causing more trips to the pump. “What a lot of folks don’t realize when you go to that higher ethanol, guess what, your fuel mileage and performance comes down,” Williamson said. “So you don’t really save anything.” Engine damage concerns Williamson said E15 can damage smaller engines, putting lawn care equipment, smaller motor vehicles and older cars at risk. “It can actually kill an engine because like I said when the ethanol starts separating out of the fuel, it basically turns to sugar form is what it does,” Williamson said. “So it’ll start eating the engines up. It’ll damage carburetors and fuel systems.” One driver said she’s not willing to put her older car at risk. “No, I don’t think it’s worth it, especially if it will tear up any vehicle that’s...

EPA Now Values Human Lives at $0 Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Email address Thank you! What’s the value of a dollar? Much less than it was before Donald Trump took office, but evidently more than that of a human life — at least if you ask the US Environmental Protection Agency, that is. That rather grim valuation came after the EPA updated its policies on industrial pollution limits. For years, the EPA has baked a figure called the “value of a statistical life” (VSL) into its cost-benefit calculations on things like factory pollution. Think of it as the number that answers the question: how much is keeping someone alive worth, in dollars, weighed against the cost of making a corporation clean up after itself? As Fortune notes, the previous answer hovered at about $11.7 million per person. The Trump administration’s answer is zero. Erasing the VSL has direct consequences for the regulatory limits on the two most common air pollutants: ozone and fine particulate matter, which are debris 30 times smaller than a human hair. When lives are assigned a higher dollar value, stricter pollution standards tend to clear the “economic efficiency” sniff test, resulting in cleaner air. But that improved...

Trump eyes Lee Zeldin for US Attorney General, bringing attention to EPA chief's policies President Donald Trump fired Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday and is reportedly considering Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin as her replacement, according to several news reports citing sources familiar with the discussions. The possibility is drawing new scrutiny to Zeldin’s tenure at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and what it could mean for the enforcement of environmental laws, particularly in North Carolina, where communities are confronting climate risks, air pollution and drinking water contamination. Zeldin has called his approach one of the largest deregulatory efforts in U.S. history, saying the agency is working to overhaul what he views as outdated rules. “If Congress wants us to do something other than what the law says, then change the law, and then we’ll do that. But we inherited a regulatory scheme that needs to be fixed,” Zeldin said in an exclusive interview with WRAL News this week in Rocky Mount. Since taking over the agency, Zeldin has rolled back decades of major environmental rules, including weakening emissions standards and repealing the 2009 endangerment finding. The finding, a cornerstone of federal climate policy, concluded that greenhouse gases pose a threat to human health and has long provided the legal foundation for...

Delegation for 4.3.26: Flyby - transferable - EPA - Bondi - Greek freedom - drill baby drill The next giant leap for mankind launched from Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday. As Artemis II started its mission, which will culminate with a flyby at the moon’s south pole, several members of Florida’s congressional delegation were among the throngs of Space Coast visitors who witnessed the crewed flight into the stars. Sen. Ashley Moody was on-site and spoke of the importance of NASA to Florida and vice versa. “It’s incredible to watch the Artemis II rocket take off this afternoon from Cape Canaveral, carrying American astronauts around the moon for the first time in more than 50 years,” the Plant City Republican said. “This is an amazing achievement toward long-term lunar exploration by the many scientists and engineers stationed here in Florida, and it’s exciting to have our state be front row to this innovation. As a Senator representing the Space Coast, it’s important to me to continue supporting this research and operations and help keep our nation first in space.” Meanwhile, Rep. Darren Soto, a Kissimmee Democrat, visited Cape Canaveral with a delegation of House members from around the country. He posted pictures of the rocket ascending into the atmosphere. “The NASA Artemis II Crew has a critical...

EPA Flags Microplastics as 'Priority' Water Contaminants, but the Move Doesn't Guarantee Regulation Citing the Trump administration’s promise to “Make America Healthy Again,” the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency placed microplastics and pharmaceuticals on a draft list of contaminants maintained by the agency. The Sixth Contaminant Candidate List includes known or likely contaminants in public water systems that are currently unregulated but may be subject to future regulation by the EPA. In a joint announcement yesterday with EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the agency heralded the move as a “historic” response to concerns raised by Americans over toxic chemicals and plastic pollution in drinking water. But environmental defense groups, as well as food and water advocacy organizations, have criticized the action as political posturing without any regulatory teeth. “This is just smoke and mirrors,” said Suzanne Novak, a senior attorney and director of drinking water advocacy at Earthjustice, an environmental public-interest group. “This is the first step in a process that almost always leads to not regulating.” Placement on the Contaminant Candidate List (CCL) does not guarantee that the agency will eventually regulate microplastics. The Safe Drinking Water Act requires the EPA to publish a new list every five years, which the agency says it...

EPA and HHS Pledge to Address Threat of Microplastics, PFAS to Health and Drinking Water Safety "We must also investigate the continued breaking of the law around the DOJ STILL hiding Epstein files from the public," Ocasio-Cortez added. "This isn’t over." Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, said in a statement that Bondi "will not escape accountability and remains legally obligated to appear before our Committee under oath" on the scheduled date of April 14. "Oversight Democrats have been leading serious investigations into Bondi and Secretary Kristi Noem," Garcia added. "If they think we are moving on because they were fired, they are gravely mistaken." The calls for Bondi to follow through with her planned testimony aren't only coming from Democrats, as Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) told CNN on Friday that she has no plans to back off her demands that the former AG speak under oath later this month. "When I issued this subpoena that was voted on by the Oversight Committee a number of weeks ago, we did it by name and not by the title of the attorney general," said Mace. "So she's still compelled and required by law to come before the Oversight Committee, and at this juncture I'm not backing away from that or backing down...
