The building doesn’t ask to be remembered. It simply refuses to disappear — brick by stubborn brick, rising against a sky that has long since moved on. Windows open to nothing. A ghost sign bleeds through the mortar, half a word, half a memory. Whatever commerce once hummed behind these walls has been swallowed whole, leaving only the architecture of absence.

However, my best guess is sometime pre-WWII as the wording suggests a single stamp was issued for a single coin (probably a pre-decimal penny coin).

Stamp vending machines were first introduced in the UK in 1907 (during the reign of Edward VII), so it must have been a later addition to this particular box, but I've no idea when.

It's made of enamel and its message (Await Delivery of Stamp Before Inserting Further Coin) seems rather odd, until you realise it's all that's left of a stamp vending machine which used to be attached to the post box.

A colour photograph of the front of a terraced house, opening straight onto a street. The brick as been stripped or a render, apparently in preparation for re-covering; it has revealed lots of details, as described in the main post.
This sundry #StHelens house might not look much, but the details tell stories spanning several lifetimes: original detail on the lintels; Second World War hydrant #GhostSign, later rendered over; main window reduced in size; and preparation for re-rendering.

A four-story brick industrial building rises against a flat grey sky, its facade bearing the faded painted legend: BAKER MFG. CO. — Monitor — WINDMILLS & ENGINES. The cursive Monitor script anchors the sign like a signature — proud once, now dissolving into the brick. Below, a loading dock with a corrugated metal awning shelters a boarded overhead door, on which someone has drawn a small, incongruous smiley face in spray paint. Bare winter branches reach up from the weeds at the base. Every window is dark, each pane a closed eye.

I spotted three faded ghost signs in Upper Norwood, near Crystal Palace earlier this week: 26 Church Road, 32 Westow Hill and Westow Street. They're all too faded or covered for anything to still be legible.

A beautifully composed shot. The perspective — shot at a low, raking angle — makes the brickwork recede dramatically, giving the wall a sense of great length and age. The image has a strong urban archaeology quality — the wall as a document, recording and eroding at the same time.

This is a great ghost sign on Blythswood Street in Glasgow. It's a throwback to a time when people needed tailor-made gowns, everyone wore hats and fur was acceptable. It's part of an advert for G.S. Nichols at 186 Bath Street.

A narrow vertical sliver of a chipped & faded, yet noticeably colorful, ghost sign is visible on the side of a brick building; an adjacent building obscures the rest of the ghost sign & wall.
The pale, largely-faded letters of an old ghost sign advertising some sort of “paper manufacturers” and their “paper boxes” can be made out running horizontally along the top portion of a brick building’s side wall. Visible a bit below is a portion of the lake street L steel superstructure, with a W Lake St street sign.
