Today on #allotment I've mostly been watching #Chiffchaff, brought in by abundance of 🍎 fall attracting myriads of tiny insects & inverts.
They come every Autumn & also in spring drawn by insect load in the #GoatWillow & flowering fruit trees.
Work can wait when these beauties arrive!

The #GoatWillow is in leaf but pollen covered male catkins are still attracting many insects & in turn birds. #Bluetit was belting out its ditty from the Charry Plum & the Male Blackbird insisted on giving me his orange-ringed stare from his favourite shrub.

Yet another Blue tit in the Goat willow pic ..
.. another great thing about this tree and willows in general is that they regrow well with either coppicing or pollarding control of growth and you get lots poles/stakes for you veg plot peas & beans!!

A Honey Bee collects pollen from the flower of a male goat willow. The flower has an 'explosion' of anthers all around its furry core. The bee is dusted with yellow pollen over its head, thorax, and legs, and its visible left hind leg has a sticky lump of collected pollen attached to it.

#GoatWillow (Salix caprea) getting into 'pussy willow' stage on my allotment. Soon these male catkins will be covered in yellow pollen & attract emerging bumblebee queens, that together w/ other pollinators will fertilise the female catkins arriving later. An important tree to wildlife! Grow one!
