Gobabis hosts fierce grand prix chess battle Justicia Shipena  Fifty-five players recently battled it out in a chess match in Gobabis during the eighth leg of the Bank Windhoek Grand Prix series.  The event recently took place at the Omaheke Regional Library with a few titled participants, drawing interest from both experienced and young chess talents.  President of the Namibia Chess Federation, Berdian Beukes, said the event gave players a chance to earn Grand Prix points and improve their national rankings.  He said the Gobabis Open was a successful leg in the Grand Prix circuit and a positive milestone for the sport in the Omaheke region.  “The event further delivered a tightly contested tournament, with the top four players all finishing on six points out of seven and final standings determined by tie-breaks. A testament to the high level of competition on the day,” he said. Uapingene, Uatiavi Jossy took first place, with his only loss coming against Arena Candidate Master Lazarus Shatipamba, who finished third. Candidate Master McLean Handjaba placed second. Beukes noted that nearly half of the participants were under age 20. Among them was 19-year-old Muundjua Mbahimwa Henry, who won the Best Youth Prize with a strong score of 6 out of 7. His only loss came against CM McLean Handjaba. In the women’s section, Linekela Itembu led with 5/7 to claim first place. Tjatindi Kamutuua came second with 3.5/7, while Tuyama Muundjua placed third with 3/7.  Her brother, Henry, also won the Best Youth Prize, making it a proud day for their family. In the cadet category, Katsvara Tanatswanashe impressed with a 4/7 score, showing promise in the youngest division. Kazembire Tjiveta won the Best Local Prize for the fourth year in a row, continuing his strong record in Gobabis. A standout moment from the day was the participation of a mother and son.  Stacey Kamundu and her seven-year-old son, Kaunatjike Uongeevandu, both competed. Stacey scored 3/7, while Uongeevandu finished with 3.5/7, narrowly beating his mother.  Beukes said the Gobabis Open showed how consistent support, dedicated players, and strong partnerships are key to growing chess in the country.

Airbag explosion kills Gobabis woman An airbag exploding out of a burning piece of scrap metal has led to the death of Josephine Setsisho (51), and caused serious injury to her son (3) at Gobabis on Monday. This is according to head of community policing in the Omaheke region chief inspector Fina Sakajengenga. She reports that the deceased had been burning a piece of metal procured by her husband from the Gobabis dumping site. “It is suspected that the alleged airbag exploded and a shrapnel struck the victim who was next to the fire on the neck, killing her instantly and injured the son on the right eye,” Sakjengenga states. The three-year-old was rushed to Gobabis State Hospital before being transferred to Windhoek where his condition remains serious. Police investigations into the matter continue. Accused man denies killing woman with car A man accused of killing a Gobabis resident by hitting her with a car denied guilt on a count of murder and other charges in the High Court yesterday. Appearing before acting judge Makapa Simasiku in the High Court at Windhoek Correctional Facility, Denzil Dawids (25) pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder, two counts of attempted murder, two charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and counts of reckless or negligent driving, assault and malicious damage to property. Dawids is accused of killing a Gobabis resident, Yolande McCullum (38), by hitting her with a pickup he was driving in the Nossobville area of Gobabis on 1 October 2023. He is also accused of reckless or negligent driving and attempting to murder two men by trying to hit them, too, with the pickup he was driving. The state is further alleging that after the crash in which McCullum was fatally injured, Dawids assaulted two men at the scene with a sjambok or stick. Those events took place after a fracas at a bar in another part of Gobabis, it is alleged as well. The state is claiming that Dawids assaulted a man at the bar by slapping him, after the man had asked him to stop spinning the wheels of his vehicle at the bar. It is also alleged that a bystander at the bar struck Dawids on the head with a bottle, whereafter the man who was slapped and his friends left the bar in a car. Before they left the bar, though, Dawids allegedly damaged their car by hitting it with a glass bottle. The state is further alleging that Dawids followed the men who had left the bar and drove into their vehicle at speed when he found it standing at a house at Nossobville. In a split second before she was struck by the pickup, McCullum managed to push her son, who was one of the men that had driven from the bar, out of harm’s way, it is said in the indictment setting out the charges against Dawids. In a plea statement read by defence lawyer Sisa Namandje after Dawids pleaded to the charges yesterday, Dawids is admitting that he was at a bar at Gobabis on 30 September 2023. He also says that after he had been attacked and seriously injured at the bar, and had lost his wallet and cellphone, he drove his vehicle to the Nossobville area of the town. The state’s first witness in Dawids’ trial, Caden Snyders, told the court he was at a bar at Gobabis when Dawids, whom he described as a friend, arrived there with a pickup. Snyders said Dawids was spinning the back wheels of his vehicle outside the bar, and he then went to ask Dawids to stop doing that. According to Snyders, Dawids reacted to his request by saying “what will you do?”, and then slapped him twice in the face. Snyders said as he went to his car, someone else hit Dawids in the face with a bottle. Before he and four of his friends left the bar, Dawids threw a bottle at his car, Snyders recounted. The car was parked at a house at Nossobville and he was about to start the vehicle when he saw the lights of an approaching vehicle and his car was hit on the side, Snyders said. He was thrown out of the car by the impact, and when he got up and walked around the car, he found McCullum lying on the ground next to the vehicle, he testified. McCullum was taken to a hospital, and he later heard she had died, Snyders said. The trial is continuing. Dawids is represented by Namandje and Karel Gaeb. State advocate Basson Lilungwe is prosecuting. The post Accused man denies killing woman with car appeared first on The Namibian.

Gobabis double murder, rape trial to start in May A young man accused of murdering two people in separate knife stabbings at Gobabis and also raping a child in a previous incident is scheduled to go on trial in the Windhoek High Court in May. John Mutirua (23) was informed of his trial dates during a pretrial hearing before acting deputy judge president Nate Ndauendapo yesterday. Ndauendapo said Mutirua’s trial is scheduled to start on 19 May and run until 30 May, and that it would continue from 23 June to 18 July. Mutirua is charged with 14 counts, including two counts of murder, five counts of rape, and two counts of attempted murder. The state is alleging that Mutirua abducted or kidnapped a nine-year-old girl and also kidnapped two boys, aged 10 and eight, at Gobabis on 23 September 2018. It is also alleged that Mutirua raped the girl four times and caused one of the boys to commit a sexual act with her as well, before fleeing from the scene where he had tied up the children. Some two years after that incident, the state is alleging, Mutirua murdered a 19-year-old man, Meno Tjizera, in the Epako area of Gobabis during the night of 30 to 31 October 2020 and tried to kill another man after that incident. Tjizera died after he had been stabbed in the chest at a wedding celebration where he was a guest. In its indictment, the state is alleging that Mutirua had been involved in an altercation with one of the wedding guests and that other guests tried to disarm him by taking a knife from him. However, he allegedly had a second knife with him and used that to stab Tjizera in the chest, with fatal results. The second murder charge that Mutirua is facing originates from an incident at Gobabis on 16 July 2023. The state is claiming that Mutirua robbed a man, Albertus Maasdorp (37), of N$1 300 in the Epako area of Gobabis. After that incident, Maasdorp’s girlfriend went to Mutirua’s residence, where she took bedding to keep as security until Mutirua had repaid the money allegedly stolen from Maasdorp. Having heard of this event, Mutirua allegedly went to look for Maasdorp and vowed to stab him to death. After finding Maasdorp in a bar, Mutirua stabbed him in the chest and then fled from the scene and threw away the knife used in the stabbing, the state is alleging. Before that, the state is claiming that he had also stabbed another man in the shoulder. The Directorate of Legal Aid has instructed lawyer Laura Pack to represent Mutirua during his trial. Mutirua is being held in custody. The post Gobabis double murder, rape trial to start in May appeared first on The Namibian.
