A pretty design by Margot circa 1940s in hand repoussage sterling silver with a single large bezel-set amethyst cabochon. Typical of the Los Castillo 1940s work, and typical of Margot's design aesthetic at that time as well. Measures about 2.5" tall by 2" wide. Marked at back in block script, "Los Castillo Taxco Sterling Mexico" and design number "591".

Although Chato Castillo of Los Castillo invented the 'pluma azteca' (Aztec Feathers) jewelry-making technique of embedding brightly colored feathers in resin and setting it in silver in the early 1950s, by the 1980s there were several Mexican designers and silversmiths that had appropriated the technique for their own designs. This is a great example of exactly that! Vividly colored bird feathers embedded in clear resin resembling 'plique a jour' enamel, and set in a sterling frame with geometric cutouts!

Designed by Stella Popowski for Los Castillo circa 1955.
Sterling backs and findings, with brass front surrounding inlaid black onyx and turquoise.
The inlay technique called 'onix negro' was made famous by Los Castillo and was invented by Chato Castillo.
The larger measures 3.5" tall by 1-7/8" widest point.
The smaller measures 1.75" tall by 1.25" widest.
Both are marked "Onix Negro" and design "046P".
The larger is also marked "Los Castillo Taxco" in a circle around the Eagle 15 mark, and also "Hecho en Mexico".
I've seen the larger example a number of times both like here as a pendant, and also as a brooch, but this is the only time that I've seen the smaller version. I'm wondering if it was intended to be a charm on a bracelet perhaps?
Interesting that the two pieces have the same design number. They are obviously related, but different enough to have their own numbers, I'd think.

A super rare vintage 1930s 40s handmade 'metales casados' (married metals) Mexican Art Deco 'Koi Fish' brooch designed and signed by Margot Van Voorhies Carr (de Taxco) (1897–1985) during her days at Los Castillo when she was married to Antonio Castillo. A large and impressive early 'metales casados' piece from Los Castillo in Taxco. Entirely handmade employing three colors of metals, sterling silver, copper, and brass to produce this dimensional design of a Koi Fish amongst underwater plants and bubbles of air! Designed by Margot Van Voorhies aka Margot de Taxco during her years as head designer at Los Castillo while still married to Antonio Castillo, hence the hand etched signature at back, "Margot de Castillo". I've only seen one other example of this design in over 40 years of collecting Los Castillo, and this is the only example signed by Margot that I have seen EVER! Measures 3.5" tall by 3" wide, and weighs 42 grams total. Marked at back as shown, "Margot de Castillo" hand etched signature at top, followed by stamped marks, "Los Castillo Taxco Sterling Mexico" with early design number "109M". I have collected the works of the Los Castillo atelier for decades, and this is the ONLY example that I have ever seen actually signed by hand by Margot! A true collector's coup, and museum quality! Don't miss out on this opportunity because it's highly unlikely that you will ever see another! Excellent vintage condition.

A rare vintage 1950s three-color (copper, dark and light silver) 'metales casados' (married metals) Mexican modernist Seated Figure Atlas design necklace created by Ana Nunez de Brilanti for her shops Victoria and Cony in Taxco. The design features a seated figure at front with head facing down, and the arms spread to the sides forming the body of the necklace. Reminds me of the Ancient Greek legend of Atlas shouldering the weight of the world! Such a unique design, and one that I haven't seen before! Ana Nunez was a great admirer and friend of Chato Castillo who invented the 'metales casados' metalworking technique, and she designed several pieces using the technique in a line that she called 'metales'. This set is in three colors - light and dark sterling silver with copper - in a very restrained geometric design! The metales casados technique was very difficult and only the most skilled metalsmiths could master it, and even for the most skilled metalsmiths it was very time consuming and thus expensive for the shops to produce. For these reasons, items using the metals casados technique are no longer produced in Taxco, or anywhere in Mexico for that matter! The necklace measures just under 1-7/8" wide at front, and fits up to a 15.5 to 16" neck at most. Weighs 62 grams, or over 2 ounces. Marked as shown, "Victoria Taxco Mexico", also "Metales Cony" with design number "521". Excellent vintage condition.

An incredible one of a kind vintage 1960s handmade 'metales casados' (married metals) and pre-Columbian ancient pre-Columbian carved green stone Mayan ear spool Mexican modernist bracelet with dangles - designed by Chato Castillo, and produced by the Los Castillo workshop - from a series by Los Castillo of similar bracelets with ancient ear spools and dangles - each in the series is unique and one of a kind, but this bracelet is an exceptional example with a dragon emerging from the center of the ancient green stone carving - marked as shown in the photos "Los Castillo Taxco" in a circle above "Hecho en Mexico" - fits up to about a 7.5" wrist and measures over 4" at front from top to bottom as shown!

Post image Heirs to a silversmithing tradition that has brought worldwide renown to Taxco, the children of Antonio Castillo Terán, one of the three great silversmiths of Taxco, have kept the essence of the family workshop alive. Lily is dedicated to preserving traditional techniques, Wolmar tends toward more contemporary creations, while Emilia has innovated by combining pure silver with porcelain. Furthermore, all three work with ancestral techniques such as repoussé, die-cutting, and lost-wax casting, as well as innovative processes that include alloying and disabling metals. Their dedication and skill have ensured that "Los Castillo" remains synonymous with excellence in Mexican silversmithing.

A rare vintage 1980s 90s handmade sterling silver and red lucite geometric Mexican modernist pendant on neckring necklace by Teresa Gonzalez for Tego & Co of Taxco. A great design that is also easy to wear! Teresa Gonzalez was born in Mexico, and raised in Taxco, where she first fell in love with Mexican jewelry design from that area. This inspired her to study jewelry and industrial design in Mexico City and later in Italy, after which she returned to Taxco to produce her jewelry designs! (See the biography of her I found online in my last photo). The pendant measures 2" long by 1-1/2" wide and hangs on a 16.5" wearable sterling silver neckring. Marked "Tego & Co. 925" at back of the pendant as shown, also marked "925" on the neckring that may or may not be original but matches perfectly. I also have the matching bracelet and earrings available - sold separately. Excellent vintage condition.

This inspired her to study jewelry and industrial design in Mexico City and later in Italy, after which she returned to Taxco to produce her jewelry designs! (See the biography of her I found online in my last photo). These earrings measure 2-1/2" long by 5/8" wide, and weigh 9.4 grams total for the pair. Marked as shown, "Tego & Co. 925". I also have the matching necklace and bracelet available - sold separately. Excellent vintage condition.

An unusual and very rare vintage 1950s signed handmade sterling silver Mexican modernist necklace with matching earrings designed by Reveriano Castillo for his workshop Reveri. Entirely handmade statement necklace constructed of solid sterling silver by this talented Taxco silversmith and designer! Castillo was an apprentice in the Spratling workshop until 1939 at which time he left to work for Hector Aguilar at the Taller Borda. In 1952 he and his wife Maria opened their workshop Reveri, and they were in business until the early 1990s. This is an early and outstanding example of the best of their mid-century modernist design! The necklace measures 16” wearable with a drop at front of 2-1/4”. The earrings measure 1-1/2” by 3/4”. The set weighs 36.4 grams total.
The pieces are marked as shown, “Reveri Sterling Taxco Made in Mexico” along with the Eagle 40 and design number 188. Excellent vintage condition.
