TUESDAY 8PM #DanuSocialHouse

The background for these #MIXEDMETALS fliers remind me of early Cocteau Twins LP cover art, glorious "fluffy tufts..." chuffed to join the fine featured poets who've appeared before me. Grand good company. Reading new work from #FAIRY. Do come. Sign up. Read with me.

A striking vintage 1980s handmade hand fabricated mixed metals pewter bronze and copper geometric post-modernist box by acclaimed American artist/metalsmith Jon Michael Route of Wisconsin. Entirely handmade likely a one of a kind object with hinged lid decorated in a geometric design with copper and bronze sections, and with black velvet-lined interior. Really a work of art that has a practical use as well!
This outstanding post-modernist box measures 6.25" across by 3-1/8" by 1-1/8" tall at edges. It weighs 380 grams or about 13.5 ounces total prior to packing. Marked at bottom as shown, "Pewter" with the copyright symbol, and "Jon Michael Route" underneath. I haven't attempted to polish this box leaving that decision up to the new owner. Excellent vintage condition.

An incredible piece by Jon Michael Route, the Man in the Moon Teapot in mixed metals - copper, brass, pewter - I love everything about it! The mismatched legs, the extravagant handle and finial, the use of different colored metals - a true museum piece!

A huge vintage 1960s 70s one of a kind handmade mixed metals (copper and bronze) and lapis lazuli modernist bangle bracelet. Entirely handmade no doubt one of a kind modernist statement bracelet! A very large lapis lazuli cabochon at center top set in a bronze bezel with bronze and copper flaring at the side, and a hinged copper band below! The bracelet measures 2.25" widest point at top, and fits up to about an 8" wrist. Weighs 81.4 grams total. The stone measures 2" long by 1.5" wide. Unmarked. I am certain that this bracelet was made in Chile. I've seen quite a few of the studio pieces from that country, and the style/construction/materials are unmistakeable. Probably only had a paper label when originally purchased which of course would have been removed by the original owner before wearing. Excellent vintage condition.

A vivid vintage 1960s 70s signed handmade sterling silver and enamel geometric modernist brooch. A truly painterly piece with a super bright orange enamel likely on copper that has been placed inside a sterling silver frame, and that has three small round 'cups' of sterling silver covered in red enamel rising above the orange enamel background! Never seen anything like this one before, and no doubt a one of a kind piece of wearable modern art! Like a little painting to decorate your attire! Measures 1.75" by 1.75" square shaped by about 3/8" thickest point, and weighs a substantial 35.3 grams total. Quite heavy for the size! Marked at back with a spiral-shaped maker mark that I haven't been able to identify yet. The maker is a mystery, but the quality of the design and craftsmanship are top-notch! Tested and guaranteed to be as described. From the estate of a NYC collector who traveled the world for her career in publishing, and purchased many unique and wonderful example of the jewelers art along the way! Excellent vintage condition.

A rare vintage 1980s handmade mixed metals bronze and silver-plate brutalist fish pendant by American metalsmith/sculptor Lee Barnes Peck of Illinois. An extraordinary example entirely handmade, and lovely how well the silver gold and copper of the mixed metals complement the shades of the handmade wood box and vice versa! Peck was born in Battle Creek, Michigan, but worked for most of his career in Illinois with his wife Naomi, where he also taught at one of the universities. Peck is well known for his incredible one of a kind brutalist jewelry, and he also received acclaim for his decorative objects including jewelry boxes and bowls. His work was included in the book, "Objects: USA" (1970), and in numerous exhibitions and gallery shows of the time. Along with Stanley Lechtzin, the artist was one of the foremost practitioners of electroplating as an art form of his era. This is an exceptional example of one of his jewelry boxes, and has an abstract mixed metals design electroplated in the metal section inset in the lid of the wood box. The box measures 7.25" long by 4.75" wide by 2-3/8" high at rim, and weighs almost 1-1/4 pounds prior to packing. Hand etched signature at bottom as shown, "Peck & Dougherty '80", and still has the original label at bottom as well for Peck and Dougherty of Sycamore, Illinois. (Dougherty was the fellow who made the wood boxes into which Lee Barnes Peck inset his little electroplated abstract paintings, the sort of custom-made frames for his art!) There is some slight oxidation to the electroplated section as expected with time, but I haven't touched it and it is completely original and as-found. Excellent vintage condition.

A huge vintage 1940s late Arts & Crafts handmade mixed metals sterling silver and copper figural Bull Rushes motif brooch designed by Betty & Martin Koop of Temming Studios at Saranac Lake, New York. A very large and very early example by this iconic upstate New York Arts & Crafts studio! Entirely handmade from sterling silver sheet with applied copper and silver wire forming the design. The silver has been oxidized black around the raised stalks of the 'rushes'. Betty Temming met Martin Koop when both were recovering from TB in the early 1940s. The two of them took craft classes at the hospital, and then after they were released they got married and opened their own jewelry shop in Saranac Lake, New York in 1944. They made all kinds of figural and whimsical jewelry in the late Arts & Crafts figural style popular from the 1930s into the 1940s period and beyond. (See my last two photos for a photo of their shop, and a gift box from their jewelry shop.) This wonderful brooch measures 3" tall by 1-3/8" wide, and weighs 18.2 grams total. Marked at back as shown, "Sterling" and "Handwrought by Temming". Their jewelry is quite rare, especially the bigger more desirable pieces like this one! From the estate of a NYC collector who traveled the world for her career in publishing, and collected unusual and interesting pieces of wearable art along the way. Excellent vintage condition.

The sterling is dotted with eight 14K yellow and white gold circles alternating with four circular sterling grommets that hold the buckle together! A tour de force exhibition of the jewelers art! Here's a short bio of the artist:

Paul Marcero was born in NYC in 1952. He studied under Albert Paley at the State University of New York at Brockport where he graduated in 1974. He studied under Dave Pimentel at Arizona State until 1976. He opened his own workshop in NYC where he was in business for about 20 years. He and his wife moved to Wilkes Barre where he had his own shop for several years, and later freelanced for various jewelers in the area until he retired in 2022.

Measures 2-1/8" by 1-5/8" by almost 1" deep, and weighs 45.3 grams total. This buckle will fit up to about a 1-1/8" wide belt at back. Marked at back with conjoined "PM" artist maker mark. Purchased directly from the artist and the description is based on information given to me from him. An incredible one of a kind piece of wearable art that will suit any occasion and unlike any other! Excellent vintage condition.

A sculptural one of a kind vintage 1960s 70s signed handmade mixed metals (sterling, copper, bronze) modernist dimensional design brooch pin. Such a unique piece unlike anything that I've seen before! A ring of jagged copper that resembles flames over a gilded bronze section with etched details, and from which emerges a copper dome on one side of which is a bronze disk from which emerges several bronze bead-tipped wires. I can't help but think that this is some kind of celestial model, maybe a sun flare, or a comet sinking into the sun? Or maybe an abstract composition with no figurative message. I can't say for sure, but the craftsmanship is astounding! Measures 3-1/8" widest by 2.5" diameter by about 1" depth at thickest point. Marked at back with cutout crescent moon shape and a dot, an unusual maker mark that I haven't seen before. No doubt originally sold in an art gallery or fair with accompanying paperwork or labeling for the maker that has been lost over the years. In any case, a fantastic one of a kind piece of wearable modernist art by a talented designer/metalsmith! Excellent vintage condition.

A museum quality one of a kind vintage 1980s signed handmade mixed metals (sterling, copper, brass) and moonstone carving fork by NYC artist/jeweler Paul Marcero. Entirely handmade hand fabricated and hammered one of a kind piece of wearable modern metal art for the table, or just to display in a case as the true piece of art that it is! The artist started with an antique cast-iron two-tined fork section that has a swiveling piece to grip onto whatever is being carved, and then he created a one of a kind work of art for the handle! Composed of copper and brass with decorative grommets piercing the handle along its length, and with a sterling silver decorative section where the handle grips the fork mechanism, and that is set with a cabochon moonstone on one side as shown. Please view my photos for the many many details of this work of art! Here's a short bio of the artist:

Paul Marcero was born in NYC in 1952. He studied under Albert Paley at the State University of New York at Brockport where he graduated in 1974. He and his wife moved to Wilkes Barre where he had his own shop for several years, and later freelanced for various jewelers in the area until he retired in 2022. I purchased this carving fork directly from the artist, and most of the information here is from him.

Measures 15.5" long by 2" deep by 1-1/8" wide, and weighs 318 grams or just about 11.25 ounces total. Marked at back with the artist signature, a conjoined "PM", and "1985". This item was no doubt used by the artists family for special occasions, and there is fine light wear and some very very small dings along some of the edges, but really nothing that is at all noticeable and no damage or detractors whatsoever as shown.

A unique one of a kind vintage 1960s 70s signed handmade mixed metals (bronze, copper, silver) geometric modernist Face design brooch. Entirely handmade in bronze with applied copper spiral 'eyes', applied silver 'nose', and applied bronze 'mouth'. The brooch was oxidized (black) in spots to outline the features of the 'face'. Makes an incredible statement! Measures 2-5/8" wide by 2-3/8" tall, and weighs 15.6 grams total. There are two applied squares at back of the silver 'nose' section as shown that look like there are (very obscure) markings on them, possibly letters or numbers. I can make out figures of some sort, but not what they are. In any case, this one of a kind piece of wearable art speaks for itself! Excellent vintage condition.

A one of a kind pair of vintage 1960s 70s signed handmade hammered mixed metals (bronze and sterling silver) brutalist modernist statement-size pierced earrings. Entirely handmade hand fabricated from bronze sheet that was hammered, and with applied sterling wire that starts at front bottomand then loops around at top and becomes the pierced wire hooks at back! Also, has two hand fabricated bronze beads on the sterling wire near the tops of each earring! Quite a unique pair of wearable modernist art earrings that make a huge statement! Each measures 3" tall by almost 1.5" widest point, and the pair weigh 21.6 grams total. There is a hand-etched signature at back that I can't make out - see my last photo for a closeup of the signature. I've no doubt these are American in origin, and likely by an artist working on the east coast as these are from the estate of a NYC collector who worked in the publishing industry for many years and collected unique modernist jewelry avidly! Excellent vintage condition.

A huge vintage 1960s 70s handmade mixed metals (copper brass and silver) Mexican modernist Fish Bones design pin/pendant. Big and beautiful striking design that makes a statement! Measures 3-1/2" by 1-5/8", and weighs half an ounce or about 15 grams total. Unmarked, and no doubt an artisan possibly one of a kind piece. I'm guessing from Mexico, and probably originally had a hang-tag or paper label which would have been removed by the original owner. In any case, an outstanding piece, and a great addition to your collection. In excellent vintage condition.

A big and bold vintage 1960s 70s one of a kind handmade copper and silver abstract modernist Puzzle design cuff bracelet. Entirely handmade with a copper bracelet to which has been applied silver in a design that resembles an abstract non-representational puzzle design, and the over top of that is more irregular copper pieces. Super striking design! Measures 1.5" wide at top, and fits up to a 7.5" wrist presently, but can be adjusted slightly to fit up or down a couple more sizes if needed. Unmarked, and no doubt the product of a talented artist and craftsman, and likely originally sold in an art gallery with accompanying paperwork or labeling that has been lost over the years. I haven't tested the silver because it would be impossible without damaging the design. This is a handmade item, and it's a mite irregular in shape which only adds to the charm in my opinion. The metal has acquired a lovely natural patina over the decades, and I haven't touched it. Excellent vintage condition.

The scenery on this silver pitcher looks straight out of an impressionist painting, or a lively Japanese print. Water ripples as fish leap out, and a dragonfly swoops down to land upon a blade of grass. Highlights are made using electroplated gold, and copper sourced from the deposits at Lake Superior. This is the work of Tiffany & Co.'s master designer Edward C. Moore and the expert craftsmanship of the Tiffany team.

A gorgeous antique Tiffany & Co 'dragonfly' pitcher, designed by Edward C. Moore, handmade in sterling silver and mixed metals in a naturalistic japonaiserie style.
