A Pale Prominent moth, well disguised as a piece of broken wood, sitting on a wooden surface
A wonderfully vibrant Red-green Carpet moth, intricately patterned in shades of green with brownish patches and wiggly black lines.
A Brindled Beauty moth with buff-coloured wings striped with black, and feathered antennae.
Despite a coolish night, a few more species in the moth trap this morning including a Brindled Beauty, two very fresh Red-green Carpets and, most surprisingly, our earliest ever Pale Prominent, all new for the year.

Four Early Grey moths
Two of four Brindled Beauty. The other two flew away.
Just 10/4 here in North Derbyshire last night (31st March) under a very bright moon when I went to noddy land. Nothing new but 4 Brindled Beauty (2 of which didn’t like the paparazzi), 4 Early Grey, and one each Small & Common Quaker. #TeamMoth #MothsMatter @savebutterflies.bsky.social #DERBYSHIRE
3 of 3 #teammoth to actinic last night An uptick given that a certain ol’ Irishman haunted the trap the night before ;) #mothsmatter #gardenwildlife
Spring moth trapping. King's College meadow is full of Cowslips and Snakeeshead fritillaries. Only one moth today, the 'local' Agonopterix purpurea but there were 7 Marbled beauty caterpillars on the white wall behind the trap (they feed on lichen). #mothsmatter
These caught my eye on a walk this morning while walking up Skelding Hill near Sheringham in light rain. Brown-tail moth caterpillars. #mothsmatter
Archiearis notha (Light Orange Underwing) male, Putney Heath, SW London - feathered antenna seen through binoculars at rest on Birch, with Aspen about 100 metres away. #MothsMatter
Hi mothy mates! This fairweather moth-er is back in business. Happy morning puzzling over identification. Can't work this one out. I think it is a dark, and battered, Frosted Green. V furry thorax. Any ideas? #Teammoth #mothsmatter
Another slow moth spell, so here is an Oleander hawk moth I caught in the South Wales valleys in October 2014..

The first Nut-tree Tussock of the year - and the earliest here in 14 years of trapping. More typical for April.
Colocasia coryli: one of the instances where an animal accidentally has the same genus name as a group of plants.
“coryli” refers to Hazel - one of the larval food plants

On our walk yesterday, in amongst a glorious sea of Blackthorn blossom, we spotted an Oak Eggar caterpillar.

An Orange Underwing moth, showing off its bright orange hindwings while feeding on primroses
The Orange Underwing (Archiearis parthenias) flies around the leafless canopy of mature birch trees on sunny, still days in early spring 🌳
They rarely descend low enough for close inspection, so binoculars are a must!

Grey Shoulder-knot Lithophane ornitopus North Antrim March26. Another moth which sees out the worst of the winter weather hidden deep in the woods, reappearing as it warms up. #moths #mothsmatter #teammoth @ulsterwildlife.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social @europebutterfly.bsky.social
Not much happening at Putney Heath Towers recently; however, Lead-coloured Drab has made a couple of appearances. #MothsMatter
#TeamMoth I’ve not had any opportunity to trap since 23/24th but in the meantime I’ve learnt a little from the more experienced moth-ers and stocked up on a couple of supplies 🤪😉 #MothsMatter

Frosted Green - a side view of a mottled green moth on a piece of slate
Six Common Quaker, six Small Quaker, three Hebrew Character and a Frosted Green. A nice quiet start to my garden mothing year. I get a bit overwhelmed when I get lots of moths when it warms up a bit!

A pile of 12 clear plastic insect collection pots with white lids on a patio. There is a brown moth in each of the pots
First garden moth trap of the year resulted in a pile of middle-sized brown moths! Let’s see how many I can remember from last year… 🤔
