A battleship unleashes a devastating barrage of cod, the fish fired from its main guns with enough kinetic force to cause craters in the water nearby. The caption reads "The difference in strategic priorities created a situation where Iceland was willing to escalate more to protect its fishing rights than the UK was. The UK didn't understand this and miscalculated its position. In all three wars it sent Royal Navy ships into the Icelandic fisheries zone, a huge provocation. Considering the importance of the fish to Iceland, and now being threatened by foreign warships in their own coast, this essentially gave Icelandic politicians no room to maneuver."
War. War never changes #Twitterstorians. Get down to the dirty business with /u/Revak158 and find out how did Iceland win all three "cod wars" against the UK? Perfect for #ThrowbackThursday! #NavalHist #BritHist

The image shows a black and white photo of a British WWII plane, armed with an underslung bomb, flying above two warships. The caption reads "those on the arctic convoys, might have difficulty providing the usual Christmas feast. Soviet bases could not supply the creature comforts that British sailors expected. Instead, they had to bring many things with them from the UK. While decorations, crackers, and Christmas puddings easily made the trip, fresh produce ran out."

A photograph of a late 19th century set of Frederick Marryat's novels. Each volume has the title in gilt on the spine with a broad arrow marking.
The new blog by @illuminator.bsky.social about finding the RN broad arrow marking on Franklin artifacts reminds me of Marryat describing the history of the mark in 'The King's Own' (the doomed hero has a broad arrow tattoo).
