An individualized residential mailbox consists of two parts inset into a mauve concrete wall. One is a piece of wood shaped like the typical mailbox door (flat on the bottom, arched on the top). The wooden door has a horizontal slat for flat mail to be inserted into the mailbox. The slat connects two round eyes. The face also has a blue nose, white circular cheeks and a rectangular mouth that may serve as a handle (it's hard to tell). Beneath the mailbox door is a rectangular drawer, perhaps for larger items. It has a black leather or plastic handle, with screws on each side. Underneath and below the handle are engraved circles with dots in their centers. The drawer is a slightly lighter shade of the mauve concrete.

Photograph of a small, mostly monochromatic blue sculptural piece. Several standard crafter's resin moulds have been used to embed broken pieces of jewellery, glass and crystal. They've been further joined together creating a single structure from seven separate moulds. I really need to photograph if again probably not on a white background... The name for the series is taken from a quote by Judith Butler which resonates with me from Giving An Account of Oneself: "Conditions of hyper-mastery... are no more salutary than conditions of radical fragmentation." A write-up I did back in 2020ish: Radical Fragmentation is a series of small resin works examining both the lived experience of traumatic memory and attempts to treat it. Disparate pieces of broken jewellery, stained glass shards, and crystal chandelier droppers have been pieced together in simple polyhedron moulds and suspended in resin. These attempts at reintegrating broken pieces of a lost whole into a predefined solid reference both fragmentation in the sense of mass spectrometry, where unstable molecular ions are used to infer the structure of the unknown original molecule, and the psychotherapy technique Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, which is used to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients.

I grew up in an idyllic place. (The farm to the left of the pic.) I can’t imagine how the Algonquin or Lenape, native peoples to this land, must have felt in leaving it. They were gone before my ancestors moved here after the ‘Hochstetler Massacre.’ How they must have carried that deep longing & connection to the same forests & land I grew to love. I used to think about those earlier inhabitants a lot. How we knew where there summer camp was by the lower springs, because of the amount of broken or unfinished arrowheads & axes. A winter camp back on ‘the mountain’ in the big glacial rocks & well-protected. I’ve no claim to the land, but I know how its beauty & safety seeps like a winter thaw, drip by drip, into your bones. Revitalizes a heart. I grew up on the farm of my ancestor who carries my last name. How on one deed the spelling added a ‘u.’ How every Maust traces roots back to that farm with its amazing view. But I also grew up with soul pain, perpetrated by man - like the buildings built permanently. Where Nature was my safety, sustenance & my healing. I tried my hardest to connect with those who were driven from the land. Learned how to move and be in the forest. Delved deep into shamanic ways. Wished my lineage was theirs & not mine. There’s such pain in the breaking. The speaking of abuse in a high-control, misogynistic religious group. Being neurodivergent & always breaking the unwritten rules. How I longed for that broken part of me to be planted in my place of safety- the woods. But the healing happens elsewhere. The ability to hold & accept a dichotomy in the same space. How I long to go back to the woods, but I know what pain lies wait in houses built by man. Description: In the foreground, barbed-wire fence, wooden post, branches & some snow on the ground. #Growth is hard. Childhood trauma splits good from bad so we can cope. Healing means learning to hold both at the same time. The longing stays, but healthy boundaries remind us why we can’t go back.
