Yesterday my two loves, spinning and gardening, converged in the form of creative use of weeds. My allotment has far too many docks, so I started cutting them back (before I dig them out) and use for dyeing wool.
Next I'll see if the roots give a different colour.

Gathered a huge batch of Spanish (not Scotch!) broom flowers today, enough for 1-2 gallons of dye. It's a beautiful buttercream yellow on wool. Simmer gently for an hour, keep hot but not boiling & soak yarn or roving for at least an hour w/ alum mordant. #naturaldyes #plantdyes #traditionalskills

A quilt made from fabric I dyed with plants in shades of pink, blue, and gray. The patchwork is done in “log cabin” squares and lined up so diagonal lines of pink, blue, and gray cross the quilt. It is tacked up on the side of my dad’s tool shed.

When used with #acorns one can get a dark gray almost black color which is rare when using #plantdyes.
