💡🧠New #preprint: we tested whether reward #learning produces lasting, context-general changes in spatial #priority.

Using #EEG + #pupillometry, we found strong #reward-learning signals, but weak transfer 4 days later, suggesting limits to persistent, task-general spatial priority #plasticity.

Your Pupils, Your Mind 👁️🧠

Pupil size isn’t just light reflex: it tracks “pupil-linked arousal” shaped by neuromodulators (NA, ACh, 5-HT, orexin). The piece argues pupils are a 1D readout of multidimensional brain states.

Pupil size reflects moment-to-moment fluctuations in mental imagery, but not (or hardly) individual differences in imagery Previous research has shown that the eyes' pupils are larger when imaging dark as compared to bright objects or scenes. Based on this, it has been claimed that pupil size is a sensitive marker of ment...

The eye test for minds without pictures is getting real Close your eyes and picture a desk lamp flicking on in a dark room. For most people, the pupils pinch, as if a real bulb just flared to life. For others, nothing happens. No reflex, no ghostly light, no inner stage. That second group has a name now, and increasingly, a measurable signature: aphantasia, the near-total absence of visual imagery.

An imagery test you can't fake: pupils shrink when you imagine light—unless you're aphantasic. The lab tool turning mind's eye into measurable data. #Aphantasia #MentalImagery #Neuroscience #Pupillometry #VisionScience

Our group is interested in causal effects of pupil size on behavior. To investigate this, we experimentally manipulate pupil size through red (red) and blue (small) inducers. This is a cool technique, **but** it used to come with a caveat. 🧵1/3 #psychology #perception #pupillometry

The image is a graph that shows five lines (one for each emotion), punctuated with small dots for uncorrected statistical significance and bigger dots for statistical significance after multiple-comparisons correction. The x-axis is labelled "Time (seconds)" and runs from just before 0 to 30 seconds. The y-axis reads "Standardised beta coefficient" and runs from just under -0.15 to 0.3. A dotted line spans across y=0, and labels indicate that positive values mean that "Emotion predicts larger pupil" and negative values that "Emotion predicts smaller pupil". Anger (in red) shows a negative trajectory from ~5 seconds after stimulus onset, with some bits statistically different from 0. Fear (purple) is indistinguishable from 0, until it is associated with larger pupils in the last 2-3 seconds. Sadness is somewhat positively associated with pupil size, but not after multiple-comparisons correction. Happiness is associated with relative pupil dilation from ~3 seconds until the end of the stimulus. Disgust is by far the most prominent predictor of larger pupil size, with standardised coefficients about twice as high as for happiness.

NEW! Using #pupillometry during emotional stimuli, we found if/when individual stimulus ratings are associated with pupil size. In short, disgust was the strongest pupil dilator, whereas anger constricts it (a bit).
