🌧️💧 On Monday, Tewks Town councillors & staff volunteered with Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust to build a Rain Garden at Gloucester Road car park - capturing rainwater 🌱, reducing flood risk 🚨, and giving local wildlife a helping hand 🐝🦋.

Rain gardens act as nature's kidneys, filtering out urban toxins before they reach our precious local watersheds. Find your property’s potential for a garden with a custom Rainplan.

Douglas Spiraea is a fantastic wetland native, and thrives in moist environments. It has no problem with wet feet, but also does very, very well in areas that are bone dry in the summer without irrigation! It has a reputation as an aggressive thug, but its spread can be controlled by limiting it's access to summer water. As an added bonus - it's a big hit with Bumblebees!
This is a section of our pasture that in previous years turned into a small stream every Winter flowing towards the back of our property where it joined a little stream and added a little more erosion along the way. Over the last two years I've been turning this area into a rain garden. Now there are Western Crabapple, multiple Scouler's Willows, Red Twig Dogwoods, Douglas Spiraea, Red Elderberry, Snowberry, California Hazelnut, and Black Hawthorn, and several Shore Pines. The rain water no longer flows like a stream and only pools for a few hours before soaking into the ground! Our current atmospheric river has shown me a few areas adjacent to this planting that I need to expand the rain garden into!
While Seablush might not absorb or aid in draining the excess water the way shrubs do, they do thrive in areas with slow Winter drainage! And, as an added bonus this beauty will show you it's appreciation for the extra wet by giving you a self-sown flower show the following year!
And, in the Pacific Northwest we can't talk about water loving natives without mentioning the always gorgeous Camas! These bulbs thrive in the Winter wet and bone dry Summers our region is known for!
One of the benefits to all of the standing water from the endless rain is having a visual indicator for where water loving native species will thrive! Many of our wetland plants are actually quite summer drought tolerant, and will help drain the Winter problem areas!

A 54.8m² #raingarden featuring 2 planters, stepping logs, a balance beam, and bug hotels! 🐝Delivered with @merton_council, it slows runoff, supports pollinators, and teaches the community how SuDS work, making the street greener, more engaging, and welcoming.
Rain gardens prevent thousands of gallons of polluted runoff every year. One change scales into real citywide impact.

This is such a brilliant idea for that space between the sidewalk and the street. I saw several of these when I walked around Portland on my last visit and they look great. #rainwatercapture #raingarden #rainwatercollecrion youtu.be/ar7IRr4YwpE?...
What can you do when you can’t dig deep enough for a #raingarden? 💧
In cities packed with utilities and hard surfacing, traditional #SuDS can be hard to install. Here’s how we solved that challenge 👇

A 1400 sq. ft. native garden near the Mount Pleasant Civic Campus. I'm curious what it looks like in summer. I'll have to try to remember to check it out next year.

One of the beneficial side effects of digging a berm to create a wetland is that we have oodles of frogs! This past week I spied this tiny jewel on a Mistflower leaf:
I’ve seen 2.5 inch green tree frogs like this, but this is def a young’un at 1/2 inch long.

Hoary Skullcap isn’t overly showy, but it’s resilient. This little gal has persisted in hot, dry, crowded conditions among the daylilies, and keeps coming back a little bigger each year. 🌱

Look at the mess that was a succulent garden.
My husband did most of the work, but we cleared out a problem area on our patio/rain garden. It looks a whole lot better and now I can stop hating myself for a failed succulent garden that turned to weeds.

Chickens in the rain garden, couldn't be happier these little shits are living it up here. Its fun seeing them enjoy this garden as much, if not more, than I do. They are doing a great job of eating the clover, a mistake I made being fixed. ❤️

Rain garden with blue flag irises and a several other native plants and sedges. I've forgotten what's what. I'm sure I'll find out when the short ones bloom.
