A raft (flock) of American Coots seen in the Cape Canaveral National Seashore area. The Coot is a small swamp-hen kind of bird, black body, distinctive white Candy Corn shaped beak. Hard to get an accurate count, I estimate 100-200 birds making the raft.

Looked like I was going to witness a real National Geographic moment. The Snowy Egret made a hasty launch as soon as the gator closest to it lunged forward. Big ol' gator was too slow and Snowy The Egret was very quick to launch to safety. They were gathered around an outflow discharge pipe catching tasty snacks...or each other if someone wasn't attention. Snowy Egret, smaller wader all white body, black legs and beak. Standing in shallow water with lily pads and other swamp bank vegetation around. Two large alligators, both arranged with their snouts pointed towards the Egret. The Egret was getting snacks from the water outflow pipe just off camera to the right. The two gators were waiting to get the egret.

For the #birdoftheday theme of the #riverbank, here's an Egyptian Goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca), seen on the banks of the Thames at Eton. Despite its name it's a kind of duck, not a goose. It was introduced into England as an ornamental bird for parks and estates in the 17th century.

A very large bird is curled up on the back side of a small bank behind some short spiky green grass with a sparkling stream flowing behind it. The light brown of the bird's back looks like a rock while its long black neck and black head with white cheeks is curled around in front and resting on the ground. The bird is peering through the grass with a black eye hoping it has not been seen.

Making like a rock and trying to hide from the world. Completely understandable.
