Why GNSS-R Soil Moisture Retrieval Has Relied on Reference Products--and How a Physics-Based Approach Is Changing That Newswise — For decades, global soil moisture monitoring from space has depended on reference datasets. Satellite observations, while indispensable, are rarely used alone; instead, their retrieval algorithms are typically calibrated or constrained using external soil moisture products derived from other satellites, models, or reanalysis systems. This practice has helped stabilize retrievals, but it has also introduced fundamental limitations—reducing transparency, constraining transferability across regions, and complicating long-term consistency as reference products evolve. A growing question in Earth observation is whether this dependence is truly unavoidable. In a study published (DOI: 10.34133/remotesensing.0939) on January 7, 2026, in the Journal of Remote Sensing, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, and the China Meteorological Administration present PHYsics-based Soil rEflectivity Retrieval (PHYSER)—a physics-based framework for spaceborne GNSS-R soil moisture retrieval. The study demonstrates that global soil moisture can be retrieved independently, without relying on any external soil moisture referenSatellite Observationce products. A long-standing constraint in satellite soil moisture retrieval Soil moisture governs the exchange of water, energy, and carbon between the land surface and the atmosphere, influencing droughts, floods, ecosystem functioning, and agricultural productivity. Satellite remote sensing has become essential for monitoring soil moisture at regional to global scales, yet existing approaches...

Veolia strengthens its leadership in PFAS treatment in Australia with AUD 220M acquisition of the country's major soil remediation player Veolia reinforces its position as a pioneer in the fight against PFAS contamination in Australia, with this acquisition acting as a double growth booster – accelerating both its geographic expansion in Australia and its capabilities in hazardous waste treatment – fully aligned with its global GreenUp strategy. The transaction, part of usual tuck-ins, is valued at AUD c.220 million. This strategic move contributes to the Group’s ambition to achieve €1 billion in revenue from PFAS & micropollutants treatment by 2030. Veolia announces the acquisition of Enviropacific, a portfolio company of Next Capital, strengthening its technological and operational capabilities in remediation, water treatment and hazardous waste management across Australia. Enviropacific reported FY25 turnover of approximately AUD c.250 million, with nearly 300 employees. The transaction is valued at AUD c.220 million (Enterprise Value). It is subject to financial close and customary conditions. Amid rising environmental and health concerns, PFAS contamination has become a major global and Australian issue, largely due to past firefighting foam use at defence sites, airports, and industrial facilities with an impact on soil and groundwater in multiple regions. Strengthened regulatory frameworks are now driving large-scale monitoring and cleanup efforts. In this context, demand for advanced treatment solutions is...

Call for good practices in sustainable management and restoration of agricultural lands and soils The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that 1.66 billion hectares of land are degraded due to human impacts, with over 60% occurring on agricultural land. Given that 95% of food production relies on healthy soil and land, it is urgent to restore these areas and adopt sustainable management practices. Grasslands, pasturelands, and rangelands cover about 54% of the Earth's land surface, providing critical services such as carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and livelihoods for millions. However, these ecosystems are increasingly threatened; for instance, 13% of grasslands are degraded, and 34% show reduced function due to pressures like overgrazing, leading to soil erosion and diminished productivity. In response, and to support the implementation of UNCCD COP16 Decision 19 (on avoiding, reducing and reversing land and soil degradation of agricultural lands), FAO and the United Nations Environment Programme-International Ecosystem Management Partnership (UNEP-IEMP), hosted by the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), agreed to jointly develop a Global Report on Good Practices in Sustainable Management and Restoration of Agricultural Lands and Soils. This report aims to showcase proven solutions to restore soil health and enhance resilience of agrifood systems. Call for submissions We...

Nano Biochar Boosts Rice Safety in Tainted Soils A new study reveals that advanced biochar-based fertilizers, especially those enhanced at the nanoscale, can significantly improve rice growth while reducing the uptake of toxic metals such as cadmium and arsenic. The findings offer a promising strategy to address the dual challenge of low fertilizer efficiency and food safety risks in contaminated agricultural soils. "Designing fertilizers that both nourish crops and reduce contaminant risks is essential for sustainable agriculture," said the study's corresponding author. "Our results show that nano-biochar fertilizers can actively regulate soil processes and help protect rice from harmful metal accumulation." Feeding a growing global population requires increasing crop yields, yet conventional fertilizers are often inefficient, with large portions of nutrients lost to the environment. This inefficiency can also worsen soil conditions and mobilize toxic elements like cadmium and arsenic, which can accumulate in staple crops such as rice and threaten human health. To tackle this issue, researchers conducted a full life-cycle greenhouse experiment using rice grown in soil co-contaminated with cadmium and arsenic. They compared traditional fertilizers with biochar-based fertilizers and nano-biochar-based fertilizers, each formulated with different nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium ratios. Biochar is a carbon-rich material produced from biomass that is known for its porous structure...

Corpses Leave Clues Behind in the Soil Long After They're Gone Newswise — President’s Professor Pamela Marshall (left) and Assistant Professor Katelyn Bolhofner pose with soil samples in one of their labs on Thursday, Feb. 19, on the West Valley campus. The researchers analyze the microbial and chemical traces left behind when remains are moved, uncovering patterns of postmortem change that can guide forensic investigations. Photo by Charlie Leight/ASU News. Download article assets It is not uncommon for a body to be moved after a murder, usually to hide or eliminate evidence. And while the Arizona desert may seem like the perfect place to commit such a crime, a new study shows that a cadaver can still leave critical clues behind in that harsh environment. Arizona State University researchers have found that trace elements linger at an original dump site even after an extensive amount of time. These elements can provide insights into postmortem processes, helping forensic investigators uncover clandestine burials and relocate the remains of murder victims. “A lot of times a murderer will kill someone and put the body somewhere, stash it, panic and then move it. And how can you ever trace where they have done this?” said Assistant Professor Katelyn Bolhofner with the School of Interdisciplinary Forensics,...

First Chagas disease conference on US soil highlights a turning point in national awareness For the first time, a conference dedicated to Chagas disease research will be held on U.S. soil, marking a significant and symbolic moment for researchers, clinicians and public health leaders working to boost awareness of the disease in this country. The inaugural U.S. Chagas Disease Meeting will be hosted by Tulane University in New Orleans from March 26–27. It comes at a pivotal time, after some researchers last year argued that Chagas disease should be considered endemic in the United States. Chagas disease is caused by a parasite carried by insects called kissing bugs. The disease is endemic in 21 countries in the Americas—not including the U.S.—and is considered a neglected and often underdiagnosed tropical disease by the Pan American Health Organization. If left untreated, Chagas disease can cause severe heart complications that could lead to heart failure. Chagas disease can also be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy. Scientists say recognition of the disease as endemic to the U.S. can help boost surveillance, testing and research efforts while also improving public awareness. “Our goal is to help build a stronger, more connected network that can advance research and ultimately improve outcomes for patients affected by Chagas disease in...
