Spotted this amazing little snow scorpionfly while out photographing lichens in Zion National Park.
They are mainly active in the winter months and have really neat cold-weather adaptations.

This is a scorpionfly. They are found in most tropical areas. Although, there is one tht has been seen near snowy areas, the snow scorpionfly or boreidae. One group chooses a mate by how much prey is given. Aww, gifts.

Side-on view of a male Scorpionfly on a Bramble leaf. His small, dark head bears a long, brownish 'beak' or rostrum, at the end of which are the mouthparts; also two long, black antennae. The longish body is mostly whitish in colour, with black along the underside of the abdomen; the legs are mostly a pale brown, but black towards the feet. We see the wings at an angle in this view but they appear greyish, with black markings; they are about the same length as the body. Finally, the very end of the tail is curved upwards and back towards the body; the first segments of it are quite thin but at the end is a larger, reddish bulb which at first sight appears to be tipped with a small, dark-coloured sting.
Adding to my #SmallWonders thread on New Year's Eve. First up, one of my favourite #insects: a #Scorpionfly. The 'scorpion-like' tail of the male is tipped with a genital bulb, bearing what looks like a pair of pincers (gonostyli), not a sting; it is used for mating, and defaecation. #UKWildlife ๐ฟ
