It is a member of the family Papilionidae (Swallowtails), named for the tail-like projections on their hind wings, resembling the tails of swallows.

The difference between the Black Swallowtail Caterpillar and Canadian Tiger Caterpillar; one looks like a Pokémon, with an orange pronged defense mechanism ( Caterpie ). They also feed in Tree leaves. While the other is Green with black stripes, as seen above and love to stuff its face with herbs, such as parsley.

Green spicebush swallowtail caterpillars on green leaves. These start as tiny brown blobs that camouflage as bird poop, then as they grow they change colors to match the leaves. They have yellow false eye markings on their backs to make themselves look larger, but their heads are actually small and brown and on the very fronts of their bodies.

A green spicebush swallowtail pupae on a green leaf - it’s laying on its side because one of its anchors broke, but I’m hopeful it will emerge unharmed. It is green to match its environment.

A brown spicebush swallowtail pupae anchored to the side of the enclosure. Since it anchored on a surface other than a leaf (usually a stem or branch), it’s brown for camouflage.

All of the #caterpillars I’m raising are wild - they’ve hatched on the host plants in my yard, and I bring them in to keep them safe from predators as they grow. These spicebush #swallowtails will pupate soon, and many of them will overwinter in my garage and released as #butterflies in the Spring.
