Photograph taken at The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle. Had it not been used as a museum, it would make a huge and very fine country residence. For further info, do take a look at their website which is really good:
www.thebowesmuseum.org.uk

Image shows a Japanese palanquin which was purchased in France by the museum owner and founder, Mr John Bowes. It is highly decorated outside in black lacquer with gold maki-e in swirls, flowers and leaves. The inside is bright (see the next photo for info on that). This would have been used by wealthy ladies of the Samurai class to travel about. It was carried on two long, decorated poles by about by six men.

I was drawn to this when I saw it in the museum. It's simply exquisite. If it wasn't so valuable, I would have loved to have climbed inside to take a proper look at the paintings.

The image focuses on the inside of the black and gold lacquer Japanese Palanquin, also known as a Norimono. It is of smooth, dark wood with a little bench seat at the back. Behind the seat is a vibrant scene in a Japanese court garden in gold, mint green, red, and pale pink with touches of blue. On the wall to the right of the seat is a floor to ceiling panel in gold painted with various scenes edged in black and lots of white cherry blossom trees.

Saying the image focuses on the inside, it does shows the edge of the exterior in greater detail, including brass handles and fancy edging.

A black and white image of a dense forest in Vancouver's Stanley Park. A small gauge railway runs up the frame from and vanishes around a curve into the woods. The track is surrounded by very tall trees and dense clusters of ferns.

While many urban parks are the product of carefully planned landscape architecture, Stanley Park is largely natural forest that has grown and been maintained alongside the growth of downtown Vancouver. In 2014 Tripadvisor named it "top park in the entire world" based on user reviews.

An old car from the Roaring 20s prohibition era sits on the street in front of Castle Green. Built in 1898, Castle Green has architectural influences of Moorish, Spanish and Victorian elements. There is the castle which is multiple stories high, and there is an elevated pedestrian walkway that used to connect Castle Green to a hotel (demolished). There are tall palm trees all around the property, giving it a distinctly Moorish, Spanish and California flair. The photo is converted to sepia tone to fit with the era of the movie. The castle has since been converted to condos.

This portrait-oriented photo is looking down from distant, higher ground onto an avenue in the grounds of a stately home.

Immediately in front of the photographer, there is rhododendron foliage at the base of the frame.

Below this, in the foreground, is a tarmac access road with a crossroads. A couple are walking in the direction of the camera. The male walker is carrying a large camera. There are other tourists milling around on grass at the top left corner of the crossroads.

Beyond the crossroads, the access road continues a considerable distance uphill to a massive obelisk on the horizon. This road is framed on either side by neatly mown lawn and then large, leafy trees.

Two carriages of a land train are visible about halfway up the road to the obelisk. As they are seen from behind, the vehicle pulling them is not visible. A couple is walking behind the land train in the same direction.

This image shows the Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee, which is a full-scale replica of the ancient Greek temple in Athens.
It was originally constructed in 1897 for the Tennessee Centennial Exposition.
The building currently serves as an art museum and features a 42-foot-tall statue of Athena Parthenos inside.
It is located within Centennial Park.
Please note that the Parthenon is scheduled to be closed for maintenance from March 1, 2026, through June 28, 2026.
The Parthenon (/ˈpɑːrθəˌnɒn, -nən/; Ancient Greek: Παρθενών, romanised: Parthenōn [par.tʰe.nɔ̌ːn]; Greek: Παρθενώνας, romanised: Parthenónas [parθeˈnonas]) is a former temple[6][7] on the Athenian Acropolis, Greece, that was dedicated to the goddess Athena. Its decorative sculptures are considered some of the high points of classical Greek art, and the Parthenon is considered an enduring symbol of ancient Greece, Western civilisation, and democracy.[8][9]

The Parthenon was built in the 5th century BC in thanksgiving for the Greek victory over the Persian invaders during the Greco-Persian Wars.[10] Like most Greek temples, the Parthenon also served as the city treasury.[11][12] Construction started in 447 BC when the Delian League was at the peak of its power. It was completed in 438 BC; work on the artwork and decorations continued until 432 BC. For a time, it served as the treasury of the Delian League, which later became the Athenian Empire.

This image shows the 42-foot-tall replica of the Athena Parthenos statue located inside the Parthenon in Centennial Park, Nashville, Tennessee.
This statue is the tallest indoor sculpture in the Western Hemisphere.
It is a full-scale replica of the original statue that stood in the ancient Parthenon in Athens, Greece, designed by the sculptor Phidias.
The statue was completed in 1990 by sculptor Alan LeQuire and features the goddess Athena holding a small statue of Nike, the goddess of victory.
The original ancient statue was made of gold and ivory, while the Nashville replica is constructed from gypsum cement and fiberglass and covered in gold leaf.
Nike, the goddess of victory, acted as a close companion, messenger, and agent of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare. Often depicted as a winged figure, Nike symbolized the victory resulting from Athena’s strategic planning, with many myths showing her crowning Athena or driving her chariot.
Key aspects of their relationship include:
Athena Nike: The two were often so closely linked that they were merged in worship, notably as Athena Nike (Athena of Victory) in Athens, where a temple was dedicated to them on the Acropolis.
Role and Symbolism: Nike often hovered in Athena's right hand or acted as her attendant, representing that successful outcomes required both strategy (Athena) and victory (Nike).
Common Portrayals: In ancient art, Nike is shown assisting Athena in her duties, often representing the victory that follows skilled, purposeful battle.
While Athena represented the wisdom and intellect required to win, Nike symbolized the tangible achievement of that victory.

It was built in 1851 by John Hutton & Sons of Dublin, who were the coachbuilders for Queen Victoria. From 1861 it became the Queen's carriage of choice, following the death of Prince Albert. The interior is covered in blue damask and the exterior is blue and black with gilt decoration. The gilded frieze around the roof was added in 1876, when Queen Victoria became Empress of India. The frieze design shows the rose of England, the thistle of Scotland, the shamrock of Ireland and a palm tree to represent India. Up to the present day, the coach has been used extensively by the royal family for state occasions.
