A plant with red tubular leaves is growing on a log in a wetland in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. This is a Pitcher Plant, a carnivorous plant that devours insects by luring them with nectar, scent, and color onto a slick, trap-shaped leaf. Once inside, insects encounter slippery waxy surfaces and downward-pointing hairs, causing them to fall into a pool of digestive enzymes or microbes at the bottom, where they are slowly digested. (I must admit, taking things from the point of view of the insect, that this sounds like a horrible way to die.) Pitcher Plants can be found in bogs, tamarack swamps, and peaty areas in the Adirondack Mountains.

A team reported in ENGINEERING Environment that three pilot-scale constructed wetland configurations showed distinct trade-offs in pollutant removal and greenhouse gas emissions, but all ultimately functioned as annual net carbon sinks.

🌿 Bright spring light over the reedbed at Valley Road Washlands. Even now, dense reeds shelter insects, birds and small mammals, shaping one of Nottinghamshire’s most important wetland habitats.
Lowland reedbeds are an LBAP Priority habitat:

A female red-winged blackbird perches along the edge of cattails in Longmont, Colorado, clutching freshly caught grasshoppers. In this vertical color photograph, the bird fills the frame as it pauses on its return to the nest. Seen in a slight three-quarter view with its head turned to the right, the blackbird holds the insects firmly in its beak, a clear sign of its role as a provider. The background is softly blurred, with vibrant green grasses that appear almost fluorescent against deeper green foliage, creating a rich, natural contrast. Photo by Kort Duce

A great blue heron gives a defiant display at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical black-and-white photograph, the viewer sees the bird perched on one leg, cropped from mid-leg to its head. Facing forward with its head turned to the left, the heron opens its beak wide as it squawks toward the camera. The sky behind it, rendered in black and white, becomes a solid charcoal gray, creating a bold, high-contrast backdrop that emphasizes the bird’s expressive posture. Photo by Kort Duce

A single snowy egret stands on the railing of a wooden boardwalk. It's feathers are ruffled along the ridge of its back and under its chest. Google suggests that this is breeding plumage. Behind is blurry reeds and bushes in the background.
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme from @alan678.bsky.social is #RuffledFeathers, so here's a snowy egret I saw on the boardwalk out at the wetlands that I think fits the theme.
