Wimbledon Park: what the High Court ruling actually means – and what happens next - Putney.news The AELTC won Thursday’s High Court ruling — but three obstacles remain: a planning challenge, a Lords amendment vote, and Merton’s unresolved covenant.

Yesterday: AELTC wins the High Court case on Wimbledon Park.

Today: what the ruling actually decided, why SWP is still fighting, and why the Lords chamber matters more than you'd think.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is a focus on #Feathers&Form.

I think this image of a black-headed gull flying low over the ice of a frozen Wimbledon Park lake fits the bill, with its wings wide and tail feathers spread.

It's icy in London as the city wakes up from its annual seasonal hibernation.

I took a little trip two stops down the District Line to Wimbledon Park, where the lake would be covered in ice, giving me a photographic opportunity.

I was not disappointed.

During the debate, O'Donnell railed against the legal uncertainty facing the scheme and spoke of the economic and environmental benefits of the plans for what opponents have described as an "industrial-scale tennis complex". He received an £86,000 payout as a member of the former golf club for agreeing to the sale of the disputed land at Wimbledon Park.
Despite O'Donnell's passionate advocacy of his amendment, many peers across the benches were fiercely against, arguing that it would erode protection for public green spaces and make it harder for communities to mount legal challenges. Perhaps Tory hereditary peer Lord Lucas summed up best when he called the amendment "an undesirable bit of retrospective legislation designed to enable the All England Lawn Tennis Club not to have to negotiate fairly with the people it is disadvantaging as a result of its plans". The amendment was rejected.

Nice piece from @privateeyenews.bsky.social re #AELTC plans for #WimbledonPark . A bit of skulduggery too far even for the Lords.

Lord tries to rewrite law to rescue Wimbledon from court battle. He sits on the AELTC board - Putney.news Lord sponsoring law change benefiting All England Club while serving as director sparks conflict concerns from MPs ahead of crucial Lords debate.

Absolutely shocking.

A Lord is proposing an Amendment to the already dire Planning & Infrastructure Bill that would do away with existing protections for parks in order to enable development of #WimbledonPark.
