Over the last 30 years or so, I was lucky enough to be able to 'rescue' fabric samples which would otherwise have been thrown away. Consequently, I still have some boxes full of fabrics, and it's always a pleasure deciding on a colour and choosing the relevant fabrics. Each piece is cut and knotted on by hand, so it takes me around 3 months to make a rug. This one has vertical stripes in shades of brown, beige, white and orange

When making a rag rug, I usually do a random design so cut up all 4,500 pieces before I start. This one was easier, as I could cut one line at a time. Blue and white dotted/striped fabric was used for the body, plus red bias binding to join the two sides. In the centre, a cupcake was made from dark blue and red/green flowered fabric, with red fabric for the icing. It was topped with a green button picking out the green leaves of the cupcake fabric. White buttonhole stitch was used to applique the cupcake to the background fabric.
The same fabric was used for both the carrier bag holder and the cupcake on the tea-cosy. It was elasticated around the bottom to prevent bags from falling out, but the top was more open, to accept new bags. The hanging loop was made from 1" wide white tape

I start with a pattern, then punch through to a card underneath, then sew the pattern with thread. More (lengthy) details of the process can be found in a previous post. Apologies for the marks on the photograph - I made this a long time ago, and had already put it in a cellophane bag, ready for a craft market. After this, I made sure I photographed cards before they were bagged!

A group of five hand-stitched herb sachets made from felt, with an applique pansy design. At the centre of the flower, there's a small button, and the hanging loop is very thin ribbon. The Rosemary and Lemon Balm were grown in the garden and dried before using in the sachets.
