The image shows a large orange and black butterfly nectaring on a white and yellow flower. This is a Monarch. It is probably the best known of all migratory butterflies, migrating from overwintering sites in the south to its northern home in the spring and back again in the fall. Most Monarchs seen during the summer in the Adirondack Mountains and in the rest of eastern and central North America are part of a migratory process that ends in Mexico. However, no single individual makes the round-trip journey. The migration process involves several Monarch generations.

A yellow and brownish bird with a nice neat chestnut cap is sitting on a branch in a bog in the Adirondack Mountains for upstate New York. This is a Palm Warbler. Palm Warblers breed in boreal forests, with an estimated 98% breeding in Canada. Palm Warblers also breed in the Adirondack Mountains. They breed in bogs and open boreal coniferous forests with scattered evergreen trees, usually near water. The Palm Warbler is one of the first warblers to arrive in the Adirondacks in the spring and one of the latest to leave our region in the fall.

A small grey and white rodent is perched on a peanut feeder at night. This is a Northern Flying Squirrel, one of 53 mammalian species that make their home in the Adirondack Park of upstate New York. These little guys don’t have wings, but they can glide using a specialized fold of skin called a patagium. I caught flying squirrels fairly frequently on our trail cameras for three or four months several years ago, but haven’t seen one since. I suspect our resident foxes got them. Our squirrel and chipmunk populations have also declined, probably for the same reason.

A female Painted Turtle is laying eggs in a hole she has dug not far from Ray Brook, Essex County, NY (Adirondack Mountains). Painted Turtles are small to medium-sized turtles. Adults are about four to ten inches long. The carapace (the top shell) is oval. It is olive to black and relatively smooth, with yellow and red borders. The plastron (lower shell) is yellow. The skin is dark with reddish-orange and yellow stripes on the neck, legs, and tail. This turtle has crawled up from the water and has prepared a nest in an open area not far from the water's edge. Nesting in northern populations of Painted Turtles takes place during June and July. The female leaves her pond or stream in search of an appropriate nesting site. Painted Turtle females usually dig their nests in loamy or sandy soil in open area with a southern exposure, often fairly near the water's edge. They usually build their nests in late afternoon or early evening. They dig their nests entirely with their hind feet and lay one to 23 eggs. The eggs are elliptical and white or cream in color with a slightly pitted surface. Females generally lay two clutches per year. For northern populations, the mean clutch size is larger, but these turtles tend to produce fewer clutches annually.
