It was at the #GoodyearAirdock (1929, architect #KarlArnstein) that the great twin #airships, #USSAkron & #USSMacon (here under construction) were built in 1931 for the #USNavy as flying aircraft carriers.
This linen-era postcard depicts the original terminal complex at Akron Municipal Airport in Akron, Ohio. The airport, which opened in 1929, served as the city’s primary commercial aviation facility prior to the development of Akron–Canton Regional Airport. The terminal building shown is a low, horizontally arranged brick structure with Art Deco influences, including a central multi-story control tower topped by radio masts and observation platforms. Exterior stairways lead to a rooftop promenade, a common design feature of early municipal airports that allowed visitors to observe aircraft operations. Prominently illustrated above the field is a U.S. Navy non-rigid airship (blimp), marked “U.S. Navy,” reflecting the era when naval airships frequently appeared at public events and over municipal airports in the 1930s. Akron was historically associated with lighter-than-air aviation due to the presence of Goodyear’s airship operations and manufacturing facilities in the city. To the right of the terminal is a hangar marked “Air Services Inc.” with a single-engine, high-wing monoplane parked in front, representative of general aviation activity typical of the period. The paved apron occupies the foreground, with landscaped grounds visible beyond the buildings. The caption at the top margin reads “AKRON MUNICIPAL AIRPORT, AKRON, OHIO.” The lower left margin credits the image to “Photo by Stivas Studio.” The lower right corner carries the publisher’s series number “3A-H1479.” The card is printed in color with a textured linen finish characteristic of American postcards produced approximately between 1930 and the mid-1940s.

We could grab international publicity out of it...and you could sign the first AFSCME contract in a blimp hovering 2000 feet over the Capitol." The memo is stapled to a larger paper (shown in other picture) and resting atop a folder labeled "Ohio Organization, 1972."
A letter dated November 15, 1972 from Richard Sailer of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company addressed to Les Finnegan. "Dear Mr. Finnegan, We are pleased to learn from your letter of November 6, 1972, that your airship press kit arrived in good order. Glad we could be of service. Regarding your specific question about the union status of our pilots, they do not belong to a union. Not surprising, when you consider there are only about 15 currently licensed lighter-than-air airship pilots in the world today."

The Graf Zeppelin on the mast at Recife de Pernambuco. After the 5000-mile flight from Friedrichshafen, the ship was refueled and reserviced for the flight to and return from Rio de Janeiro. It was then again refueled, and hydrogen added as needed, for the return flight to Friedrichshafen.
