Yew Artichoke Gall (Taxomyia taxi)

I have been looking for this gall for ages and then 67 came along at once at two different sites

Orange larva or pupa are inside. The galls eventually turn brown and can stay on the plant right through to the next year

Don't let this delicate little muppet fly fool you - larvae are voracious predators of armored scale insects! A member of the "gall" midge family, it has abandoned plant feeding for a meat-based diet (like many others).

Carbonifera goldenrod gall midges (Asteromyia carbonifera). I'd love to know more about the purple pigment. Is it produced by the fungus (Botryosphaeria dothidea) that is farmed by the midge? Or by the plant, at the direction of the midge? 🌿 #diptera #flies #fungi #galls #cecidomyiidae #insects

On a beautiful island on Strangford Lough, I think this is the gall midge Geocrypta rostriformis on Ladies' Bedstraw.

I think this is a female Dasineura urticae laying into nettles. There were galls of the same species lower down on the plant and it's the most common by far.

A gall midge, Loewiola centaureae, on Centaurea ~nigra. I think this is the first record for Surrey. This one really reminds me of the Dasineura spp. on Meadowsweet.

A screen grab of an article titled "Community science collaboration enhances understanding of fireweed flower gall midge distribution in Alaska". The cover shows a three panel photograph displaying a fireweed flower spire on the left, a closeup of a galled bud in the middle, and an opened bud with larvae inside on the right.

An article about a recent community science project on the fireweed flower gall midge in Alaska! These galls caught my attention while doing field work for a pollinator research project but turned into a project all of their own! www.akentsoc.org/doc/AKES_new... #entomology #Alaska #cecidomyiidae 🧪🪰

We think that gall midges may be playing a (somewhat underappreciated) role in cocoa pollination as well. They're really abundant on cocoa farms, but ID challenges and high diversity means sorting out who is doing what is...hard.

Starting off here with a last spring snapshot of Sitodiplosis mosellana—the orange wheat blossom midge. This #cecidomyiidae may not form #galls, but it’s a major pest of cereals 🌾. #diptera #entomology
