A female cone of a coontie (Zamia floridana or Z. Integrifolia). The reddish-brown oval shaped cone is about 3.5 inches (9 cm) high. Coonties are the host plant for the rare Atala butterfly. The seeds will be a vivid red-orange color.

Where I grew up in South Florida, populations of our native cycad, Zamia integrifolia, were devastated by early settlers’ schemes to extract starch from the stems & roots.
