Earlier today, I posted the diagram of cotyledon exposure, position & function. Here’s a real-life example: Seedlings of Intsia palembanica have phanerocotylar, epigeal, storage cotyledons. #seed #cotyledon #Fabaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Not all seeds have endosperm as their storage tissue. Some seeds store the energy needed for germination in the embryo’s cotyledons. You know peanuts: the 2 halves are the 2 cotyledons. The embryonic root & shoot are the little structures at the base. #cotyledon #Fabaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Current events are real bad and everything feels awful. I’m trying to be like the lupine, working together with others in my biosphere to make the environment better for everyone. I sure wish I had some fungal help.

Plants in the genus Chorizema have stunning flowers. Nearly all the members of this genus are endemic to Western Australia. Like this one seen in Albany in the southwest of WA, which I think is Chorizema glycinifolium.

Coalescent species tree inferred by ASTRAL-Pro based on 819 homologous gene trees. Numbers to the right of nodes indicate local posterior probability. Pie charts at internal nodes indicate the percentage of quartets in gene trees that agree with the shown main topology (green; average 60.6%, minimum 39.3%, maximum 92.6%), the first alternative topology (yellow; average 18.6%, minimum 3.9%, maximum 36.9%), and the second alternative topology (orange; average 20.8%, minimum 3.5%, maximum 39.4%).

A close, vertical-frame photograph of a dense cluster of pink-and-white vetch flowers (pea-type blossoms) fills the scene. Individual florets show the papilionaceous structure — a curved banner (upper petal), lateral wings, and a tucked keel — arranged along slender stems that weave through the frame. Colors range from pale blush to deeper magenta and lavender with bright green, needlelike foliage at the base; the background is pleasantly blurred into purple-green bokeh that makes the foreground blossoms pop. A small ant is clearly visible near the upper-right of the image, climbing a stem. The watermark ©UDKo sits in the lower-left corner and is visible but unobtrusive.

2. Scientific Context

These flowers belong to the legume family (Fabaceae), most likely a vetch (Vicia sp.) or a closely related roadside/wild meadow species. Legumes have the distinctive pea-flower shape adapted for bee pollination, and many vetches fix nitrogen in the soil via root nodules, improving local fertility while supporting insect visitors. Note: while bees are typical pollinators of vetch, this specific photograph shows an ant — ants often forage for nectar or honeydew but are generally poor pollinators because they don’t efficiently transfer pollen between flowers. The photo therefore documents structural botany (banner/wings/keel), ecological role (meadow plant supporting insects), and a small behavioral snapshot (ant foraging).
